Pacific Western Brewing’s expanded craft brewed Canterbury Family has gone to the dark side with the introduction of Canterbury Dunkel. This brew’s packaging celebrates the Canterbury Family’s British roots, in this case Archbishop of Canterbury Alphege, a valiant cathedral hero who died in 1011 defending his flock. Canterbury Dunkel is typical of German style beers that originated in and around Bavaria and are widely brewed around the world. This is often what consumers refer to when they think of dark beer.

Can. Has a nice amber-brown colour. Some particulate floating in it, though. I wouldn't have expected that from this beer/brewery, but ok. The nose leads with caramel. On the palate, it's more towards toffee, but light. Fairly light body, but just enough residual sugar. I mean, it's industrial, like Warsteiner Dark or something, so not the sort of dunkel I'd get excited about, but you'd find random beers like this in most kiosks or getrankemarkt in Germany.

Light cocoa and toast. Deep rich brown with a rich beige head. Cocoa and light dark bready notes. Not bad.
