I, as a kid staring up in wonder, wondered how he got that and where he came from, hadn’t seen him in months. Pine. Yeah, pine on the nose - that’s it. He’s been sleeping in pine needles for weeks stalking a deer or an elk or something and finally carved off a piece for dinner. His shirt is stained from gun oil and there is that faint hint of something flammable having been ignited in the past 12 hours. Then, I’m there in the toolshed with dad and grandpa, he’s cleaning his boots and this smell comes around again. The flavour is the shoe polish he’s using to get his boots cleaned, some gun oil, and some caribou meat. Chunks of abandoned beef jerky are roasting by the wood stove. He takes out a leather strap to sharpen his blade. Swish, swish, swish, I can hear it against the leather strap and getting sharper. The toolshed is filled with smoke from the woodfire and only a candle or two keeps us lit from darkness, total humid darkness in the hot dry summer of the southern mountains. I can taste that bone dry wood ready to burn at any minute, pine needles and twigs crunching underfoot with a starry sky above; The brew drifts away quickly, doesn’t leave anything nasty, and is full of character. I’ll linger for awhile. This brings back memories, intense ones, and not once does it break the suspension of disbelief. Well done.
