To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the publication of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, Oregon's Gigantic Brewing and Dark Horse Comics are teaming up to create 666 cases of Hellboy beer, based on award-winning cartoonist Mike Mignola’s legendary character. All told, Gigantic Brewing will release six different Hellboy beers, with flavors inspired by fan-favorite characters from the Hellboy comic books. Each new beer will be a limited edition run of 666 cases and will be released approximately every seven weeks. The first beer, Hellboy, features a maple syrup and pancake profile. Gigantic Brewing’s first Hellboy beer will be released in March, ahead of Hellboy Day on March 23, 2019, when comic book stores and fans across the country will celebrate twenty-five years of Hellboy comics and graphic novels.

Super deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white and tan head that fades relatively quickly and doesn't leave anything on top or on the sides. Aroma of pure 'hotcakes syrup', or in other words - fake maple syrup with a lot more caster sugar notes, some light toffee and caramelised sugars with a lot of toasted malts, some graininess, a dash of honey and pitted fruits, but this really is about that maple syrup and malt combination and in the nose, it's great! Medium-bodied; Fairly thinnish malt notes show at first (probably due to the age) with a big maple syrup (again, artificial, but I love it) flavour right behind with a big sweetness and a strong enough malt balance with little else, aside from a small hit of fruits at the finish of prunes and raisins. Aftertaste shows the deep sugars here with some lighter nuttiness and earthy qualities, but a dry finish and some raisins, but the grainy qualities are pretty much gone by this point and while some vanilla is here, it's more of a toffee, molasses and especially syrup flavour at the finish. Overall, a very nice, sweet, and fairly balanced beer that is not quite a porter, but shows a lot of sugars and some toasted malts - very nice and easy-drinking, perhaps the age had something to do with that! I sampled this 50 cL bottle, purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia on 19-July-2019 for US$10,99 sampled just over 3 years later at my house here in Washington, a few blocks away on 26-August-2022.

Bottle from La Riviera in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear, but very dark, red orange with a small tan head. Maple syrup aroma. Approaching full bodied. Flavor is very maple syrup. And there's something very like pancake for bread/malt. Yet it's not wholly sweet, and not all that sticky. Somehow it's balanced between dry/malt/bitter. But mostly it's really very maple syrup on pancakes. Amazing.

500ml at Matt's. Appearance: dark hazy copper with a tan head. Aroma: maple syrup and dark fruits. Taste: similar. Overall: meh, too much of maple syrup.

16 oz. bottle, pours a murky deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is loaded with maple syrup upfront and cocoa. Flavour is dominated by the maple syrup upfront, with some artificial cocoa and caramel. The maple syrup isn't too convincing here. It's alright, but there are far better maple syrup beers.

Medium brown colour, but not much head. On the nose there's a big maple syrup aroma. On the palate, it's a lot of maple syrup. Pretty light. A bit toasty, but that's about it. It's pretty one dimensional to me.

Keg at MKE Burger - Appleton, 5/29/19. Black, thin fizzy tan head, pour retention. Aroma of intense maple syrup with vanilla and hints of coffee. Taste is roast, maple nuts, chocolate, coffee, green banana. Thin-medium bodied, decent balance despite the overwhelming sweetness of the aroma.

.5l bottle courtesy of Toby. Dark brown, mahoghany, tiny head. Maple aroma, butter too, and yes, the pancakes. Taste tones the sweetness a bit, but still pretty strong on the maple. Bitterness towards the back, spme cola notes.
