A L T H E A // BARREL AGED BRETT SAISON // 7.0% [Al-thee-uh]: “healer; to cure”. ALTHEA is the first release from our young, but promising barrel program.

Brewed with pilsner malt, wheat malt, and raw wheat, Althea was initially fermented with a blend of french and belgian saison yeast strains. After primary fermentation was complete, the base was transferred to 7 california chardonnay barrels with a variety of different microbes.

For this initial blend of Althea, we selected barrels #12 and #13 from our program. Both had aged for 5 months, and while still young, we fell in love with the character that had developed. #12 was conditioned with brettanomyces bruxellensis, and showcased notes of vanilla, pear, clove, oak and mild barnyard funk. #13 was conditioned with brettanomyces lambicus, and was certainly the funkier of the two barrels. The chardonnay notes were more restrained in this barr#el, and some classic brett characteristics developed - earthiness, horse blanket, and some mild stone fruit.
The resulting blend is off-dry, effervescent, oak forward, and showcases layered notes of pear, fresh grapes, and mild funk.

Hazy and a bit greyish. No head. Funky nose, sort of a stale yeastiness. Overly yeasty, not necessarily hitting for me.

Taster shared with Ash. Appearance: hazy golden with a white head. Aroma: some Belgian Saison notes with sweet grapes character and some funk. Taste: similar, moderately sweet. Overall: good Belgian Saison inspired beer.

Murky dark yellow body and minimal foam, soft sort of rotting lemon aroma with a modest amount of funk. Flavour is kind of an earthy white wine notes, vanilla hints from the wood and citrus grain hints. Medium finish. Very nice, layered, a great step in the right direction.

Draught at the brewery
Cloudy blond colour. Strong Brett character all over, funky smell, good body strength, powerful Chardonnay, but also evident vegetable character, harsh tannins, rough finish.
Trying to impress with a bunch of things, but not coming together at all. Lack of elegance. Rough drink.

On tap at Farmhouse Fest 2019, pours a cloudy golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of barnyard funk and some wild yeast. Flavour reveals a very nice, bright funky character, some stone fruit skins, and a little wild yeast. Love the funk character. Good stuff.
