Barrel Aged Foreign Stout

ABV: 8.5% IBU: 50 Ticks: 7
This stout was traditionally brewed to a higher alcohol content to survive the sea voyage to the foreign market. Our version was aged for four months in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels adding complexity and smoothness to this deceptively strong beer.

Bottle, purchased at the brewery. Dark brown, with a fairly large head. Rich dark fruity aroma with lots of chocolate and a fair bit of bourbon as well. But the base beer smells like a legit foreign stout. Rich fruity, chocolatey, full bodied. Subtle bourbon lends sweetness and rounded vanilla notes. Just a hint of alcohol late. Fuller and richer than what FES is these days. Honestly, this is impressive. Nailing the base beer, hitting a great balance with the treatment. I'd score this one really well at a pro judging. Excellent.

500 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with full tan head. Aromas of chicory, light oak and slick roasted malts. Flavors of oily roasted malts and acidic black coffee. Pretty much dead on category. Same as the other raters cannot get any of the Woodford barrel. No bourbon at all... Good.

500ml bottle at Erik's. Appearance: dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: some coffee and lots of roasted malt. Taste: very roasty and bitter, with some touch of sweetness. Overall: a good stout, but how come it is a barrel aged I don't know.

650mL bottle, pours black with a large tan head. Aroma reveals medium roasted malt, with some oats, dry cocoa, and a hint of wood. Flavour is robust, with medium roasted malt, some dry cocoa, oats, and a hint of wood. A bit higher carbonated than it should be, but it is acceptable. I don't get any of the barrel. It's a good roasted stout.

Dark roast and toast. Jet black brown with a rich light brown head. Roast, toast and some chocolate. Nice fudge notes and a long cocoa finish. Not much barrel, but quite nice.

2019-05-30, tasting at Erik's, bottle, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Solid brew, but not really a FES, a bit too much liquorice, and no barrel.

2019-02-02, draught at Dageraad, Burnaby, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Black colour with dark brown head. Mild aroma of molasses and dark chocolate. Smooth mouthfeel, lean, not too strong; dark chocolate flavour, salty, a bit sour, with molasses and a touch of liquorice and coffee.
Solid.

On tap at the brewery. Aroma is some soft coffee with hints of roasted barley. Has very mellow foam on top of black body with no translucency. Flavour is big heavy sweetness, some molasses with hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel is a little overpowering and just too sweet. It's an okay effort but they need to pull back and work on their talents.
