Scottish ale, little brother to the “wee heavy” is a soft, full bodied, malty ale, nicely balanced by subtle hopping “ Come lengthen your life-lease wi’ ye o’ Scottish ale.”

On tap. Pours a dark reddish mahogany with light head. Not really much there in either aroma or flavors; just a malty beverage with some notes of brown sugar and caramel. Drinkable and nothing really wrong for the style; just an uninspiring example.

Weak ruby-brown body and no foam, poured too high. Smells like someone dumped their nail polish remover into a jar of soya sauce. Flavour is artificial smoke and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is the most tepid liquid I have ever encountered - literally brown bath water. Imagine drinking that and you got a good idea of this stuff.

On tap at Longwood Brewpub, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma reveals some strange peaty notes upfront that dominate. Flavour is sour, with peaty smoke, and nasty sour fruits. Something is infected here. Bad.

Woody and almost liquid smoke. Clear gold with a small white head. Lightly soured wood with some toasted sweetness.

Dark copper-amber colour. Chewy, toffeeish aroma with hints of brown sugar. Earthy, slightly toffeeish malt flavour - slight spice, hint of apple ester, brown sugar.
