Like many ESBs before it, it suffered from being called an ESB (a style which not a lot of people know), and riding that hop-forward Ale category while being below the 5% threshold. It has all the qualities of a beer we like. It was refreshing, it was hoppy, it was balanced, and it was lower ABV. People loved it […] but not enough people bought it over time to make it viable for us to keep it under the Flagship lineup. We changed the name to West Coast ESB, then considered changing it again to a Pale Ale but thought that was disingenuous to the style that we were trying to achieve. Eventually we just decided to nix it all together and bring it back at a later date for those of you who missed it, us included.

Medium clearish copper body and okay foam, good balanced hop and malt notes on the nose. Flavour is sharp malts and hops, good oiliness. Nice finish.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Hazy amber colour. Aroma and flavour have the typical earthy character of Bitters, on the mild side, which results also in a cleaner and maybe easier to drink beer, with biscuity malt, and balanced bitterness.
Very good, clean.

On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a hazy amber orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out bready malt and gentle British hops. Flavour is along the same lines, with bready malt, British hops, and a touch of dry caramel. Dry and bready. This is a really nice ESB.

Amber-brown colour, with just a touch of haze. Medium head. Big chewy caramel and crystal malt character, with an earthy hop note and a really nice, subtle ester signature of an English yeast...subtle tree fruits that lend great balance. Very chewy palate, light toffee, but mostly just straight up crystal malt chewiness. As with the nose, this is complemented by a lightly estery yeast profile and a rich earthy hop profile. Just a solid premium bitter.
