650ml bottle. Leftover from the previous day tasting at Alex's, hehe. Pours a clear brown with a tan head. Aroma is moderate green apples, caramel. Taste is slight bourbon, some green apples and roasted malt. It's ok.

650mL bottle, pours a hazy dark copper with a small beige head. Aroma is along the same lines, with lots of bourbon barrels, molasses, bready malt and toasted caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of bourbon barrels, molasses, and bready caramel. Bourbon character is actually pretty good here. Solid.

Bottle from The Gull, North Vancouver
Hazy amber colour. Knowing that these are second use barrels, there is more Bourbon than expected; some aroma of apples, light fudge, mild alcohol; the body is quite light, there is some caramel and fudge flavour, dry finish with light astringency.
Ok beer.

Dark caramel, touch of ginger and light barrel notes. Clearish Amber with a frothy beige head. Caramel, soft malty notes, barrel and a long malty finish.

Golden-brown colour with a thin head. Almost entirely bright. The bourbon is a bit over the top, lending too much bubblegum and estery notes, messing with the toffeeish, molasses malts. On the palate, this is sweet, with a nice molasses note. The heavyness of the bourbon is less so here, but still lends a fairly strong character. Just not the weird notes. So the finish is sweet, more rounded than the aroma hints at. Not bad, but seems that the base doppelbock is only ok (not surprising since it's not from lower Bavaria) and the treatment doesn't quite fit. I'm thinking rum might have been a better choice, or a barrel that's a bit cleaner (like later uses). It's not bad, but there are some structural issues here.
