The complexity of simplicity. Ramping up a simple recipe of base malt and East Kent Golding provides a rich and intense ale that with time will develop great complexity.

2013 keg, tapped as part of Hop and Hound call the keg contest. Thanks Eric and Jason! Wonderfully put together Barleywine, pours a perfect toasty orange with a half a finger of foam. Bold dark fruit paired with some wood. Raisin, malt. Dark flavors with a light bright appearance. Smooth for its strength. Mellow, which makes me wish I could try one fresh. An absolute treat to try this one almost 8 years later.

2013 bottle from Systembolaget. Opaque dark orange with dirt white head. Aroma is dominated by caramel, fruit and marzipan. Taste is similar with big caramel, a bit of honey, fruit and marzipan. Extremely sweet and boozy without much of elegance. Short, caramel finish.

Flaska från SB. 2013 vintage. Smak och doft av karamell, fruktig blommig honung, citrus med en smygande ton av pepparrot. Fin beska, lagom sötma, bra balans, beska med citrustoner.

(Bottle) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, spicy nose with notes of orange marmalade, honey, dried fruit (figs), treacle toffee, lemon (or lime?) juice and vinous, boozy hints of glue. Malty, fruity, vinous taste with orange marmalade, honey, black pepper, dried apricots, candy sugar, hints of lime juice and a gluey, vinous finish with a balanced spicy bitterness. More than medium body, quite sweet. Tasty, but too sweet and boozy to be called balanced. Quite nice.

Riktigt gott.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden pale amber color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty dark fruit and caramel aroma. Sweetish malty spicy caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit finish.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. About 1 year old. Pours deep golden with a creamy offwhite head that leaves some thick lacing on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, malty and slightly boozy with caramel, old dark bread, oatmeal, apple jam, unripe pears, glue, hay and alcohol. Taste is sweet, very tiny sour, malty and fruity with caramel, oatmeal, caramelized apples, baked pears, hay, soil, leather, alcohol and hints of marzipan. Mouthfeel is soft, slightly velvety, round, slightly boozy and near full bodied. Finish is sweet, very tiny sour, malty and fruity with caramel, oatmeal, apple jam, baked pear, hay, soil, lemon zest, alcohol and hints of marzipan. Initial reviews were unfavourable so I held on to this for a while. Pretty bad smelling pleasantly tasting pome-driven barley wine.

on tap at Erzbierschof Liebefeld, June 20, 2014. The high abv is very noticeable. Cloudy orange color with a proper white head. Some fruit in the aroma, but also sugar, malt and bread. Taste is sweet with some hops and caramel in there. Complex. I enjoyed it very much.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Hazy orange, small head. Aroma of gin and tonic with extra lime juice. Underlying syrupy malt sweetness, but sour lime juice dominates. Marzipan, tart mead and loads of gin. Sticky finish with burning alcohol. A total mess.
