Bottle at the Bayou. Pours a medium brown color with a large white head. The aroma is light cocoa and spices. A very nice flavor; sweet toasted malts, cocoa, oranges, light spices as more than a hint of funkiness and even slight sourness. Interesting. I liked that it was a brown ale first and the additions came later.

Sample at 1808 American Bistro. The beer pours a deep brownish-red color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Spots of lacing around the glass. Aroma of spices, tart fruit and caramel. Medium body with a moderately sour character and notes of tart apple, caramel, oak and spice. The finish is cinnamon and apples with a lingering fruity aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

A dark reddish amber ale with a surer thick frothy and lacing big bubbled mocha head. In aroma, a superb herbaceous and funky dark fruit, lactic notes, sour cherries, very nice. In mouth, a smooth corky and fruity malt, light sour cherries, lactic notes, some nuttyness, very nice. Shared with Mike and friends, April 1, 2012.

Tap at Monk’s Kettle, SF. It pours cloudy red-amber, with pretty much no head. The nose is boiled sweets, sweet cherry, plastic and tangy strawberry - quite synthetic. The taste is tart cherry, strawberry, lemon, candied peel, nutmeg and cinnamon, with some dryness in the finish. Thin body and soft-fine carbonation. It’s fairly drinkable, but too thin.

Draft at Sugar Maple. Red-brown, murky with a yellowed beige head. Mellow oak, sour aroma. Sort of a twisted end product, creamy brown ale with lots of sour tones. Somewhat toasty and nutty upfront, then falls into a creamy, watery, sour-tinged nothing finish. Lactic. Not so impressive for a JP. Sort of like a tweaked out, watery English nut-brown with some alcohol laced funk infused. I wanna love it, but it just isn’t happening. Awkward vanilla tones. Underwhelming.

Greg brought this one to the October 2011 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 750ml brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel color with a large foamy tan head that lingered and left some lacing. The aroma was tart and sour with light cherries and berries and a bit of brett. The flavor was tart and bitter with a touch of honey and strong notes of cherry and pear and a hint of pepper. The finish was long, tart, sour and bitter with lingering fruit and pepper. Medium body. Ok.

75 cl bottle from Berkeley Bowl. Love rocky head on pretty amber-orange beer. Funky, dusty aroma with lemon, caramel, and chocolate. Medium sour flavor, chocolate / cocoa, some spices, cherry, caramel malt. Very interesting, even strange, though very drinkable and tasty. Not mind-blowing, but good.
