Latus revisits the original beer that launched the Bird of Prey series. This very unique sour has been conditioned in a mix of American and French oak wine barrels for a year, creating a dry, sour and funky profile that will continue to evolve for a very long time. This 2016 version showcases the maturing character of the barrels and the tart, fruity depth of a Flanders Red.

650ml bottle from O'Hare's LRS shared with George before his leaving to Calgary. Vintage 2016. Pours a hazy brown with a tan head. Aroma is sour and sweet cherries with oak notes. Taste is similar, quite dry. Good stuff.

Vintage 2016, 1 year old
Cloudy dark amber color, dull, with barely any head. Penetrating aroma, malty, sour, fruity; plums, prunes, also vinous, hints of barrel. Good body strength; nice malt base, it has strong wine barrel or vinous qualities, and robust acidity too, with mild tannins and astringency in the final, lightly earthy, dark fruits in between.
Very good.

22 oz bottle poured, courtesy of mcberko. Thanks! A caramel color orange pour with a patchy fizz head. A funk constant sour fruit aroma. Flavor is a dark fruit up front, with a ton of oak and some unique wine notes. Very strange sour here for me. A lingering funk to it. Pretty good, but weird.

650mL bottle, pours a cloudy dark orangey brown with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out light funky brett, red wine barrels, and some light balsamic. Flavour is bizarre, with tons of balsamic vinegar, tart red berries and a hint of brett. Not really appropriately structured, with a strangely viscous palate. Maybe the 1+ year of aging didn't help, but this isn't very convincing.

Bottle. Looks awful. Muddy, dull, light brown, no head. Looks like Zhigulyovskoye, and you never want to do that. I’m already wishing I hadn’t bought this. The aroma is random vinous sour, touch of brett, and a lot of barrel. An incoherent mess on the nose. Taste is equally messy...fairly strong lacto, barrel, some random sweetness, no particular vinous character and none of this comes together at all. Just sloppy. Not offensive, but utterly pointless, going absolutely nowhere. You get a beer like this in your barrels, you blend it with something.

650 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange/brown with light head. Aromas of sweet malts, caramel, buttery oak, and tart mashed berries. Flavors are pretty much the same, full and sweet to start and a light tart finish. Not sure what this is trying to be but it’s tasty enough.

Bottle - Light soured caramel malts with a touch of cherry. Clear copper with a decent white head. Soured earthy dark malts with some dark fruity notes.
