Sparks fly when bold & beautiful tropical hops meet a brazen & daring roasted malt base. Their chemistry is undeniable and perfectly balances the hop flavours and aromas of a powerhouse IPA with the depth and intricacy of a complex dark ale.
The creator of the Fearless IPA and Commander Imperial Stout pulls no punches with his newest masterpiece. He’s brought your taste buds to their knees with monstrous Imperial IPAs and made them sing with cavernously deep Imperial Brown Ales. Now he brings you his greatest triumph!
Malts: Pale Ale, Cara 60, Biscuit, Chocolate, Carafa II, Special B, Roast Barley

Nice aroma of hops with just a soft hint of roasted barley. Good black body and a bit of beige foam. Flavour is a bright and heavy mix of barley and hops with a crisp finish. Good oiliness on the mouth. Nice and certainly one of their better brews.

Draft - Lots of dark roast. Jet brown with a beige rich head. Dark roast and light leafy hop. Not enough hop to compete with roast .

Draught @ Alibi Room, Vancouver, BC
Pours dark brown, almost black with a smooth head. Aroma of roasty malts, grassy hops, coffee, dark chocolate and licorice. Taste is roasty, sweetish and grassy hoppy with some coffee, licorice and dark chocolate. Finish is smooth, hoppy and roasty with some licorice. Quite tasty black IPA.

650mL bottle, pours black with a medium beige / tan head. Aroma is quite chalky, with notes of roast, dry cocoa, and some piney hops. Flavour is really wonderful, with notes of roasted malt, dry cocoa, and lots of dry piney hops. Really dry and balanced amazingly well between the roast and hops. Wow, Dead Frog brewed an excellent one here. Fantastic.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of fruity grape jelly, light pine, and toasted malts. Flavors of roasted malts, mangos, dark fruit, and pine. Bitter finish. A nice black IPA.

Dark brown body. The aroma has a mango-citrus hop character, and toasty dark malt notes. Rich, rounded bitterness, but also a lot of malt sweetness especially from the Belgian stuff. The roast barley is quite apparent, particularly in the finish. The bright citrus and fruit of the aroma takes a back seat on the palate. Rich, hearty bitterness, smooth body...a blast of Black IPA goodness, quite intense for lovers of the style. Like me.

with Republica Coffee Roaster’s Yirgacheffe (a smooth and slightly fruity roast), dry-hopped with Galaxy and an addition of Bourbon-soaked, toasted American oak
Black color with compact beige head. Delicate aroma with more fruity tones. Smooth mouthfeel; some more chocolate and less roastiness than the other versions, some vanilla, oak, biscuits, spices, cappuccino; moderate, pleasant sweetness; lingering fruity presence. Although hidden by the dark malts, there are nice hop resins in the final. The elements are in harmony, and it’s well balanced.
Fresh, highly drinkable, excellent.

with Centennial hops, vanilla/Bourbon-soaked cacao nibs, sweet orange peel and chipotle pepper
Black color with compact head. Roasted malt aroma, a bit dusty, fruity, and some chipotle. Lean mouthfeel; roasted malt flavor, some chocolate; the chipotle is a bit too strong; the bourbon and cocoa very light. The chili hotness is spoiling the good beer.

Black color with creamy beige head. Strong aroma of freshly brewed boutique coffee. Smooth and dry mouthfeel; strong flavor of roasted malts, some coffee, hidden biscuits, some spices; strong bitterness with abrasive hop resins. Some creamy feeling in the final.
Not a big fan of the style, but it’s a very good example of it.
