Aromas of smoke and roast up front, this strong, dark ale is brewed with a hefty percentage of beechwood smoked barley malt and roasted malts. Rich and roasty with a balancing hop presence, this is a perfect beer to pair with food or to sip on its own on a cold winter’s night.

Draft - Nitro - Lots of sweet smoke and some chocolate. Jet deep brown with a creamy rich light brown head. Toffee and sweet smoke with a nice malty finish. Not sure how or what nitro does to this, but it is pretty good.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Black color, beige head. Smooth but rather dry, with an equal combination of roasted malt and dark chocolate, the smoke is more evident in the flavor than in the aroma. Nice campfire in the final.
Excellent Porter, delicate smoke.

Draft at Alibi room. Very smokey aroma with a touch of mazut (black oil). Well balanced taste and aftertaste with notes of fruits and roasted malt bitterness with a touch of oil. Very good.

Aged, 2015 bottle sampled in 2019. This fizzed up a bit when poured, producing a fair bit of head, which did fall down, and the beer overall was not overly fizzy - carbonation was actually just right. The aroma still showed a decent smoke character, but with more fruitiness. On the palate, light smoke, lots of rich sweet notes, molasses, raisins, general fruitines comes out a lot, unlike when fresh. There's still smoke, but a beautiful fruity vibrancy has developed. Delicious, aged very beautifully, and I would say is probably peaking (2 years ago, this wasn't anything special but today it is). 8 3 8 4 17 = 4.1 Fresh, 2015: Medium brown, smoky aroma and rich smoky taste. Lots of chocolatey, slightly roasty dark malts...sweet and intense. Pretty good stuff. 7 3 8 4 16 = 3.8

650mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Nose brings out peated malt, along with some roast and chalk. Flavour is along the same lines, with peated malt, chalk, and dry roastiness. Excellent balance of flavours -- the smoke / peat is not too dominating, though it certainly does lend a robustness. Very nice stuff. Another good beer from Persephone.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with moderate head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of smoked bacon and a bit of cola. Flavors of light chocolate and smoked almonds. A nice moderately smoked beer.
