Every beer has a story, here's Punkin Ale...

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.

Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!

Since its debut, we've brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it's usually gone by Thanksgiving.

Dry balanced with some nice cinammon notes. Very lightly hopped. Body is deceptively light. Easy drinking beer.

Bottle. Amber with moderate off white head. Sugary vegetable aroma. Squash flavor with a bit of hoppiness, as well as some caramel malt and a dry spicy finish. Light carbonated body. I’ve tasted several different pumpkin ales over the last couple of weeks, and wasn’t especially impressed with this one.

Sampel from bottle at SWBF. A spicy and sweet brew, more pumpkin than in other pumpkin beers I’ve tried.

Sample @ SBWF. Pours orange. Tastes and smells cinnanomon and pumpkin. Very sweet, still balanced in some way. I love pumpkin beers!

12 oz. bottle, pours clear dark copper with a small head. Aroma of pumpkin, nutmeg, coriander and cinnamon. Flavour of subtle pumpkin, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg - though it's not a bold or complex palate. Underwhelming for Dogfish Head, but still solid.

This was my third pumpkin ale of the evening. I got to say it wasn’t as good as the Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale but it was a tad better then the South Hampton. The body and mouth feel was better then most pumpkins I’ve had. Not super sweet or over spiced.

Poured from 12 oz bottle, enjoyed while watching Sunday Night Football after relaxing from the Chicago Half Marathon. Appearance is a very clear brown / orange with a thin, almost unapparent head. Aroma of pumpkin, clove and cinnamon, rather sweet. Taste is pretty sweet, rich in cinnamon and nutmeg, syrupy mouthfeel, the pumpkin flavor isn’t as prevalent as other Pumpkin Ale’s I’ve tried, but it’s still noticeable. This is pretty good, but not great.

I guess pumpkin beers are unavoidable at this time of year, but after a staffer at Churchkey made me try Tom Schlafly’s version, I decided I would try to overcome my prejudice and try a few more. This version is a decent enough spice beer, where the vegetable (a squash is a vegetable, right?) is very subtle. Tasty enough to try again.

Definitely one of my favorites from this brewer that I usually think tries too hard to be different, but this was easily the best of the pumpkin beers ive had. a nice soft brown ale at its heart, the infection of the pumpkin flavor does not turn this into a sticky sweet crapfest that most pumpkin beers turn out to be, the pumpkin is understated enough so that its still enjoyable after the first few sips, I still could only have a couple before I get annoyed by it, but thats more than most.
