Every beer has a story, here's Punkin Ale...

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.

Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!

Since its debut, we've brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it's usually gone by Thanksgiving.

The beer has a balanced, restrained flavor that is heavier on spice than sweetness. Dark and murky with a light head. You can practically see nutmeg and allspice floating through the dark orange depths, and those flavors come through strongly in the aroma. If these beers mostly smell like slices of pumpkin pie, this one is on the heavily spiced end of the spectrum of pumpkin pie. There is some pumpkin in it, but baking spices are the stars. The spice imparts a warmth and cheer to the malt flavor of the beer. Pumpkin flavors chime in without drowning things out in sweetness. Itโ€™s a good, warm, holiday brew. Feel is on the spicier, warmer end of things. The carbonation is relatively light. This is a good beer, but I donโ€™t want more than one or two bottles of anything that tastes like a dessert than I donโ€™t eat outside of one day a year.

Bottle. A great pumpkin beer. Pours a medium amber with a crisp, white head. Autumnal aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and sugary malts. Flavor follows a similar profile: spicy with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg, with some malty sweetness and just a tad of bitter bite. Nice, spicy, pumkiny aftertaste. Body is medium and seems substantial. Solid pumpkin beer. Not too big, not too small. Quintessential.

Bottle. Pretty amber orange color with lace. Spicy, sweet, pumpkin aroma. Huge spices, a bit over the top. Yet the flavor is much more subdued and elegant, a big surprise after the big aroma. Ok pumpkin, nice spices, good alcohol and fruit, with a bit of acid. Very well balanced.

Bottled. A dark amber beer with a thin light tan head. The aroma has notes of pumpkin and cinnamon as well as some caramel and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of cinnamon and other spices combined with notes of pumpkin and caramel, leading to a dry spicy finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Bottle: Sweet spiciness lingers from cinnamon, nutmeg, and a carmelized sugar kind of thing. The first sip seriously tastes like burning spices. Just overwhelming with whatever the fuck the label says; seems more like radioactive cloves to me. Awful lingering aftertaste suggests getting a large bottle of water. I drank half this before getting heartburn...
