Every beer has a story, here's Punkin Ale...

A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, brown sugar and spices. As the season cools, this is the perfect beer to warm up with.

Punkin Ale is named after the seriously off-centered southern Delaware extravaganza Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made its debut as it claimed first prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest. Yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business!

Since its debut, we've brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around Sept. 1 each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it's usually gone by Thanksgiving.

A hazy reddish brown ale with a thick off white head. An aroma of sweet vanilla fudge and pumpkin pie spices, very nice and subdued. In mouth, a hoppier interpretation, with loads of sweet vanilla malt, cloves, ginger, and nice hops lingering on, oily mouthfeel, quite pleasant.

12 oz bottle. Aroma of....pumpkin beer! Pours a light amber hue with little head, decent lacing. Flavors just as the label describes. Much more full-bodied than Blue Moon’s Pumpkin Ale and Jack’s (Michelob). Not watery at all. Definitely the best "punkin" beer yet.

(Draught) Poured amber and clear. Had small white head. Aroma was of spices and malts. Medium palate had medium carbonation. There was malts, spices and bitterness in taste. Spiceness and bitterness continued in aftertaste.

Barley malt with nutmeg and clove aroma. Clear dark gold, thin head. The flavor is about a 60/40 pumpkin/clove. Mulberry finish. Alcohol content obvious, but without seeming perfumey. Improves with warming.

Bottle as shown. Pours a copper orange with a large creamy off white head that leaves good sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong spice and cinnamon and light malt. Thin mouthfeel with a light caramel malt with pumpkin, cinnamon, and a nice spicy finish. Easy to drink, hiding the alcohol well, a very good Spice from Dogfish Head.

Bottle. Poured an orangish amber with a pop like quickly dissipating off-white head. Aroma has a nice combination of cinnamon and pumpkin with a malty undertone. Flavor is full of spices with a clear cinnamon flavor as well as some brown sugar. Pumpkin notes are a bit reserved.

Location: Wanted to update this rating, so I picked up a bottle at Gilly's and drank it 9/20/09

Aroma: Nice pumpkin spice aroma, not quite as nice as I remembered, some brown sugar and yeast too
Appearance: Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thin white head
Flavor: Similar to the nose, quite a bit of spice up-front, has a really nice pumpkin flavor, and a yeasty, sweet malt finish
Palate: Nice mouthfell, some fizziness is present, medium body
Overall Impression: I think this is a pretty good pumpkin beer, one of the better ones. As fall comes around again, I realize that this is a style that I really seem to enjoy quite a bit, especially on an early fall evening complete with football and beer. Every year, DFH does a very nice job of achieving what I had hoped for with this brew. I can see why I had previously mentioned a little too strong a pumpkin flavor, but I'm really liking that flavor this time, and not bothered at all by its strength.

Old rating: (Was a 3.3)
Had this one many times.
Overall Impression: Dogfish doesn't make any bad beers that I've tried. This one's good again, a little too strong of a pumpkin flavor, and a nice taste to it.

Bottled. Clear amber color, small white head. Rye bread, nut meg, pumpkin and cinnamon in the nose. Brown sugga, coffee, cardamon flavored cookies in the flavor. Some hops and alcohol in the finish. Quite Christmasy actually.

12 oz bottle courtesy of eaglefan538. I assume this is the 2008 version. Pour is clear orange caramel with some quick settling and a smallish off white head. Aroma of cloves, cinnamon and pumpkin. Also some nice nuttiness, nutmeg. Certainly a pumpkin beer nose. Taste is the cloves, sharp bitter spiciness, cinnamon, pumpkin and a peppery finish. A hint of alcohol heat coupled with the brown sugar in the aftertaste. There is a bitter waxiness to the palate, which somehow also manages to be creamy, medium full, and mouth coating. This was an aggressive pumpkin beer to be sure, but it was well made and flavorful.
