The typical barley wine may find its origins in English Ale, but there’s nothing typical about this special brew. This thick.

full-bodied beer has a deep coppery red colour and a malty backbone, balanced with an impressive fruitiness from Australian Galaxy and Victoria Secret hops. Cellar the beer and enjoy for up to five years - or if you just can’t wait, try it tonight.

Editor’s note, as of the 2015 vintage, the Granville Island Barley Wine is no longer barrel aged, it’s matured in steel.

650 bottle. Pours a reddish mahogany with full head. Aromas of brown sugar, caramel malts, and copper. Good start but flavors don’t keep up. Metallic dry malts with bitter hops. Foo.

Very strange barleywine. Light caramel and... stewed meat in the aroma. Same in taste - stewed meat & caramel. Would not recommend to drink it.

Bottle from the brewery taproom shop
Brown color, the head dissipates quite quickly. Smell of meat, not too bad, but quite weird; soap. Moderately sweet, flavor of caramel, iron/tomato/meat, some nuts, correct bitterness.
Mess, quite bad.

650mL bottle, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out bready malts, light caramel and some stale cardboard. Flavour is strange as hell, with lots of bready malts, some buttery diacetyl notes, and some odd astringency. Really messed up. Not a complete trainwreck, but it's not very pleasant.
