This is an American Barley Wine. Assertive bitterness and lots of residual sweetness. Crystal rye will add some spiciness and is not a typical malt choice for this style. Melanoidin malt will add a biscuit flavour.

Golden-brown, gentle bubbly head. Looks nice. Aroma is mellow. Taste mixes higher phenolic notes like bubblegum with a lot of simple brown sugar. Good body - the cask makes it drinkable, which in my experience is seldom the case in strong ales. The beer overall, however, is quite simple.

Cask at the brewery
Dark amber color, hazy, with compact head. Light malt aroma. It has a nice caramel flavor with malt, moderately sweet, a bit nutty, but lacking the depth of most Barley Wines; fairly strong bitterness; in the final there are some raisins and plums; the alcohol perception is very strong, but the warmth is well integrated.
A bit atypical as Barley Wine, but definitively very enjoyable.

Draft - Sweet toffee and plum notes. Deep brown and copper with a small white head. Sweet caramel and plum with a long finish. Touch of booze but OK.

On cask at Main Street, pours a deep dark amber with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out bready malt, caramel, and brown sugar. Flavour is very hoppy and malty, with brown sugar, resinous hops, toffee and caramel malt. Really nicely balanced, with a perfect complimenting of resinous hops to the caramel malt. Not impeccably complex, but it works really well. Very good.
