The dark is nothing to fear with a beer this smooth and approachable. Roasted malt counterpoints a chord struck with black currant, cherry and raspberry. It has subtle sweetness and soft bitterness that echo in the aftertaste. It’s hard not to dance to the tune of Midnight Rhapsody.

330ml bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with red hue and a small, creamy, short lived, tan head that leaves spotty lacing. Mild aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, cherry and raspberry. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, chocolate, ash, black currant, raspberry and cherry in a dry, slightly tart finish. Light body with a thin texture and soft carbonation. A simple fruit beer. Could use some bitterness to balance out the sweetness.

Poured from the tap. Dark brown with tan head. Very mild chocolate, dominant blueberry and blackberry, hint of raspberry. A decent fruit beer, wouldn’t classify as a porter.

Similar to the Old Black Bear with the dark fruits. However this is NOT a porter, it has no roast. Another in a long line of underwhelming beers from Big Rock Urban

Draught & bottle, Big Rock Urban. The body is a dark/medium brown, and there is not much head. The aroma has a lot of black/raspberry character with light chocolate malts. This seems like a take on the Black Bear Ale that the brewer here made when he was at Kamloops Brewery back in the day. There’s a lot of berry on the palate, with light chocolate and vague roast on the palate. Overall it’s well-balanced,with a sweeter chocolatey finish and just a hint of roasty bitterness. The fruit remain fairly noticeable throughout. A nice, lighter take on a winter ale.

Draught at Big Rock Urban Brewery, Vancouver
Dark brown color. The aroma is loaded with fudge. Nice soft body, some chocolate flavor, very light touch of berries, and a bit of butter also in the end.
It may be a decent beer, but it seems to have some diacetyl.

On tap at Big Rock Urban, pours black with a reddish tinge and a small tan head. Aroma brings out lots of red berries upfront, followed by roasted malt. Flavour is dominated by the berries, which create an almost jammy character without imparting sweetness. Just a touch of roast to back things up, absolutely no hoppy bitterness detectable. Very nice for what it is.

650 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with light head. Aromas of blueberries, coffee, and roasted malts. Flavors of sweet dark berries and roasted malts. Lots of scrubbing carbonation. A nice dark fruity beer that is easy to drink. Nothing wrong here. Sweet for a porter but very nice for the ABV.

Draft - Blueberry, dark malts and a touch of butter. Deep mahogany with a decent off white head. Some dark fruit, blueberry and dark malts. Meh.
