Phillips is cooling off Mid-January by revealing a special 341mL brew that has archaealcohologists salivating over their topographical maps.

It’s called Mass Extinction Ice Barley Wine and just like the dinosaurs this beer was ice-aged at glacial temperatures. It was frozen 3 times during the Fermentaceous Period causing the remaining liquid to distill into naturally-sweetened nectar, and driving the ABV up to a mammoth 12%. Enjoy responsibly.

Phillips’ Mass Extinction Ice Barley Wine is available for a limited time in select private retail outlets.

Brownish-amber, no head. It's a bit old, and came in a twist off, so I guess that has affected the carbonation a bit. On the nose, there is a rich malt sugar character that speaks to the iced character. It's got some thickness, malts, but it doesn't have a whole lot of complexity. Ends up not bad, though the base beer isn't that great and it only improved a little bit.

Bottle split at RB Best awards dinner, thanks, 30/01/16. Hazed chestnut brown with an off white covering. Nose is spice, toffee, caramel, biscuit, lacks depth for the ABV. Taste comprises thick syrupy fruits, spice, figs, light oxidization, rich fruit rinds, toffee. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so.

2017-12-06, bottle from Legacy, 7 years old, 6-3-7-3-14=33
The aroma shows small signs of oxidization, and of cereals. The mouthfeel is a bit oily, it has mild signs of oxidization, but decent malt depth too.
Not too bad.

2015-11-25, bottle from Legacy Liquor Store, Vancouver, 6-3-6-3-12=30
Some aroma of cereals, glue, treacle. Lean body, moderately sweet, caramel flavor, some Parmesan, a bit too boozy.

2012-01-17, bottle from Legacy Liquor Store, Vancouver, 6-4-7-3-12=32
Mahogany color, with red shades; head almost absent. Deep aroma of grains. Medium body strength; the mouthfeel is rather oily; flavor of caramel and grains, with some liquorice; medium sweetness; ordinary bitterness level, with some booziness in the final.
Quite cloying; difficult to understand what the target was, but it's unachieved.
