Tart Saison with spices

Brewed in collaboration with Alex Ganum from Portland’s Upright Brewing, Ornette Witbier will be available in glasses and growlers!

Named in honour of the recently departed jazz great, Ornette Coleman, Ornette is a witbier brewed with some unusual grains, some out-there spicing and a partial sour mash. We call it Free Brewing, and we think it’s the shape of brewing to come.

"I have always wanted to go into the mainstream, but I didn’t want to sacrifice what I was doing to get there."

- Ornette Coleman

Draft - Belgian yeasty notes and some sweetness. Clear gold with a small white head. Sweet, perfume, light pepper and an effervescent finish. Perfumy, sweet and nice.

Poured from the tap. Hazy pale yellow with minimal white head. Usual dageraad Belgian yeast with hints of banana and spice, but this one also has a light creamy candy like finish I can’t quite put my finger on.

Draft @ Alibi Room. Hazy and pale. Light spice with a hint of bubblegum. A bit more bubblegum on the palate with some floral character as well. The malts are dry, a bit biscuity even. Not bad, but arguably below the level of both of these breweries.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a cloudy yellowish blonde with a small white head. Aroma is heavy on the Belgian yeast, with a little banana, floral esters and a touch of spice. Flavour is yeasty and floral, with lots of Belgian yeast, floral notes and some residual candied sugar. Pretty well-balanced though a tad sweet I'd say. Despite this, it's clean and drinkable. Not very complex or elegant but it's decent.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Cloudy pale blond color. The aroma is lightly spicy, and with some celery. The mouthfeel is smooth, but the malt flavor is simple, a bit bready, maybe wheat; moderately spicy, but also with vegetable bitterness, and with metallic feeling; there is a hint of orange peel. Nor it’s tart as announced.
Clumsy and dirty, chewy, chalky. Not very pleasant.
