Founders most complex, most innovative, most feared and yet most revered ale produced. Massive in complexity the huge malt character balances the insane amount of alpha's used to create this monster. More IBU's than any brewery has documented, more than you would believe and dry-hopped for twenty-six days straight with a combination of 10 hop varieties. Dangerously drinkable and deliciously evil. We dare you to dance with the Devil.

Bottle from 啤酒阿姨 in Shanghai at home in HK. Dark copper amber pour with dense persistent white head. Aroma is candied dark fruit, oily resin, nutty malt. Not so fresh unfortunately but still interesting. Slightly barleywine-ish. Taste is similar to other giant IPAs, which aren’t usually my favorite. Huge boozy bitter bite, dark fruit, heavy sweet bready malt in the background. Palate definitely heavy but not too syrupy. Lasting tingly bitter boozy burn. Good but wouldn’t get again.

Bottle from Total Wine & More, St. Petersburg. Amber, clear, with a little bit of carbonation. Smell is... fuck me. Caramel, toast, massive resin. And booze, booze, booze. Taste is much more balanced, less boozy. There’s the hop bitterness of course but it’s overlaid by a thick malty sweetness. The alcohol hits again in the finish, resplendent with bitter hop oils. Cherry and pine in the aftertaste. This is intense and frightening. I’m ignoring the inevitable balance issues and giving this a full on yes.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Hazy amber body with a medium off-white head. Lively fizz. Faint lacing. Aroma of cherry, fruit pudding and pine. Flavour of burnt sugar, crystalised orange peel and tongue-tingling hops. Medium to full body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Rich, hoppy and dangerously drinkable for the ABV. Sweet nectar for hop heads.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/2/2016. Pours fairly hazy ruby red/light orange/copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange peel, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light toffee, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, light toffee, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Large amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange rind, pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, creamy/bready, and lightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an excellent huge DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the huge ABV, and despite aggressive bitterness. A very enjoyable offering.
