At the original Troller Pub in Horseshoe Bay, BC, one man assembled a brewhouse from used dairy equipment and started brewing. His name is John Mitchell and in the spring of 1982 he opened the first modern craft brewery in Canada.

All hail John Mitchell, entrepreneur, lobbyist, accidental brewmaster. Question: What does a guy do when the other guy holds all the cards? Answer: Gets another deck. In response to a lock out of unionized workers by the Big Three flavour-free beer companies and to keep his business going and the beer flowing. John Mitchell pushed Canada into the age of micro brewing. And along with it John gave us beer with flavor, old world style. So it was in 1982, Canada’s first craft beer since Prohibition, Bay ale, an English bitter, was introduced at the Troller pub in Horseshoe Bay to ’sell-out’ success. Originally modeled after the classic Fuller’s London Pride, Troller Bay Ale is a smooth, flavourful amber ale, with a well-developed hop character. Brewed with Fuggles and Nugget hops, Canadian barley malt, West Coast water and London ale yeast.
