We’re brewers whose substantial mettle and idiomatic approach to brewing allows us to consistently create works of art such as this justifiably self righteous ale. Its bitterness hits our sweet spot. Its blackness lightens our hearts. Its liquid dichotomy pulls it all together in this sublimely sacrosanct ale. Yes, we damn well know our stuff here at Stone, and it would be irresponsible of us not to acknowledge how remarkable this heavenly creation of ours is. Thus the name we are compelled to give it ... Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale ... serves as a reminder of just how good we are, in both liquid and verbal form.
We re certainly not perfect. Too often, we allow our modesty to get the best of us as we re simply not inclined towards senseless braggadocio. When youre good, youre good. And when you do something great, the least you can do is acknowledge it. Others benefit from knowing. In this case, we find that we are compelled to point out how amazing this beer is that we rightly call the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale.
First brewed in 2007 as Stone 11th Anniversary Ale, this beer was an instant hit. With us. Other folks with great taste loved it too, but we were focused on how much we liked it, and we felt it was truly sublime. That euphoria didnt last long though, as it was soon replaced with the grim reality that when we sold out of it there wouldnt be any more. For Us. And that was simply unacceptable. So, we are now blessing ourselves, and you the enlightened, with this beer on a full time basis.. Thusly, you may now revel in your own self righteousness as you see fit with this glorious example of ours. You are genuinely welcome, as it is our pleasure.

Medium brown head. Opaque black body goes dark brown at edges. Deep resiny citric aroma with earthy fruity notes. Sweet-dryish orangey earthy resiny taste with minty roasty notes. Fullish body. Soft, smooth mouthfeel with some heat. Dry roasty caramelly aftertaste with resiny minty pineapple notes. Traces of burnt chocoalte and lacquered wood, too. Lovely and complex. Highly drinkable, yet sharp and full of character and flavour. (0.65l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)

Flaska @ Akkurat. Mörk, brun vätska med högt gräddfärgat skum. Massiv gräsig, grapeig doft. Smaken är härlig med Stones lagoma balans mellan malt och beska. Mmm, mumma.

Draught at BBF13. Caramelly aroma, a little alcohol. Very dark brown colour, seems cloudy. Good caramelly flavour. Quite bitter and quite alcoholic, but well-balanced. Sweetish with a spicy hop note. Good.

Draft - Roast malts and grapefruit. A bit so spice, maybe anise? You can almost see through the dark mahogany, and a beige nice rich head. Big pine and toasted malts. Thin body and a bit of alcohol burn, not as I had hoped with the aroma. Not bad, but just ok.

Draught @ BBF13. Pours hazy very dark brown with light tan head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel, hops and fruit. Sweetish, malty flavour with regular hoppy notes and a touch of grass. Bitter finish. Good. Really good.

Good beer, or food, can evoke emotions. This beer is akin to an autumnal walk with the dog, through a damp, fusty pine forest. Whilst in the background someone is burning leaves on a bonfire. And some plastic, while they’re at it, as they can’t be bothered taking it to the tip. Whilst eating a huge bag of liquorice sweets. (Me, not them). And I don’t even like liquorice. Except in this beer. Which is really very good.
