Ola Dubh (pronounced ‘ola-doo’ and Gaelic for ‘black oil’) was conceived in 2007. It was the first ale to be matured in whisky barrels from a named distillery and with traceable casks and numbered bottles, it is a beer with real provenance.

This amazing brew has been aged in selected oak casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 40 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, adding complementary whisky notes to our chocolatey, bittersweet beer.

Flaske 0,33l - nummerert 38858 -spandert av og delt med Rune på seanse hjemme hos ham 12 Jan 12. Svart. Høyt lysebrunt skum. Klar whisky-aroma. Smaken tørr & røykfylt. Litt krydret. Avslutningen har et visst øl-preg.

bottle #39152 dated Jan. 2009 - Pours dark brown with a very small tan head. Smoky scotch clearly dominates the aroma and there’s a bit of chocolate under it. The flavor is full of smoky whisky goodness with sweet chocolate malt. It’s smooth and the whisky and smoke lingers pleasantly in the finish. I liked this one more than the 12 year bottle. I like scotch. Of course if I didn’t, why on earth would I have bought this brew?

Clear dark brown with an beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, dried fruit, a little vanilla, wood and moderate whisky. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish with a little alcohol. Full bodied. This was tasted head to head with the 30 year old. Surprisingly the 30 year old was a little better. It was smoother and softer. Still a great beer though. 191211

Black with a dense tan head. Aroma of chocolate, peat, sherry, spices, wild berries. Rich and sweet with dark toffee, berries, wood, spices - particularly vanilla, but also white pepper. Luscious oily mouthfeel. Complex but fairly easygoing - it’s not that heavy. Lots of whisky influence, but unlike the others of these I’ve tried so far, it’s well integrated. Wood, iodine, peppery bitterness and alcohol at the end.

11.2 oz. bottle, pours dark brown / black with a tiny tan head. Aroma is extremely woody, with dry whiskey, burnt malt, and a slight licorice note. Flavour is very dry and woody, with notes of whiskey, dry burnt wood, some licorice, and charred malt. Finishes dry, woody and a bit boozy. Excellent, though I actually prefer the 12, 16 and 18.

Smell of coffee and licorice, also some berries. Oily, almost pitch black, no head. Soft carbonation. Taste of wood, overripe berries, then coffee a bit later. Also alcohol and whisky to be noted. Bitter, lightly sweet. Beer doesn’t get too much better than this.
