Ola Dubh (pronounced ‘ola-doo’ and Gaelic for ‘black oil’) was conceived in 2007. It was the first ale to be matured in whisky barrels from a named distillery and with traceable casks and numbered bottles, it is a beer with real provenance.
This amazing brew has been aged in selected oak casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 40 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, adding complementary whisky notes to our chocolatey, bittersweet beer.

0.33l bottle. Then it's time to taste the last in the series. Pours a black and oily body with a nice bubbly and lacing chocolate head. Aroma is nice and smoky, light burned oaky wood, light sweet, perhaps even some vanilla in here and some peat. God I love that Ola Dub aroma. It's average to lively carbonated, medium-bodied and has a strong oily mouthfeel. Tastes just like it's supposed to. There's licorice, wood, dark malts, smoke, peat, tar, also some thin chocolate. It ends mild dry with a everlasting smoky aftertaste. Really solid stuff!

Bottle thanks to TexasJeep who shared it at the May Houston RB Tasting. Pours a dark brown with small tan head with spotty lacing. The aroma is oak whiskey and smoke. Thin mouthfeel with molasses and smoke with a nice oaky finish. Alcohol present but not overpowering, a very good old ale from Harviestoun.

Bottle shared with Deanso. Clear almost black pour with small tan head. Strong whiskey in the aroma with vanilla and caramel. Same aspects in the flavour with a nice woodiness. Really smooth and suprisingly not overpowered by the whiskey. Fantastic beer.

33 cl bottle, #40801: bottled JAN 2009, BBE 04/2012 (sic!). Rated on 24.6.2011
Tasting of all Ola Dubh versions from 12 to 40 and Old Engine Oil as a reference. With 16, this was the worst dubh.
The oaky whisky barrel aroma hits my nose immediately when pouring. When I moved my nose closer I could observe whisky, vanilla and oak. But the most interesting thing was the clear aroma of a crayon! The same crayon lingers in the flavour with roasted liqorice and whiskey. After all, this is still rather well balanced and even though this was worst dubh I still like to drink this. The price (14€) was really high when comparing to the taste.

Bottle, 8.0%. Distinct roasted aroma, old smoke and vanilla. Black colour. Big unstable brown head. The flavour is equally distinct, powerful roasted note, some smoke, hint of vanilla. There is some alcohol in the finish, rather rough, a little burning, but also warming.

330ml bottle from Alko Arkadia
Pours pitch black with a sticky head. Aroma has heavy notes of vanilla, whisky and wood. Taste is dominated with vanilla notes. Has hints of smoke, oak and chocolate. Finish is pretty slick with some nice whisky notes and hints of bitterness. Quite complex, but still well balanced and very enjoyable. Could’ve used some more body, but still certainly a great barrel aged beer.
