Bottle - Smoky, hoppy and malty. Clear amber beige head. Smokey, dark malts and some hoppy bitterness. Dry finish. So well balanced and not over the top considering the enormous flavours. Really well done.

Pour is more of a brown with a small white head. Aroma is a pretty good hop but no real malt come through. Flavor is more of the smoke. Not a huge smoke but it will open your eyes if you don’t know it’s coming. Some hops are present as well after the swallow. Not really a black IPA I would call this a hoppy rauchbier. It’s something different and unique.

Bottle. Earthy toasty malt, brown sugar, and fruity/citrusy hops aroma. Brown with a small beige head. Smoky toasty malt, tea, and fruity herbal hops flavor. Light body, moderate carbonation.

Deep brown coloured body with hints of lighter brown and copper colours noticeable with a solid three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of toasted rice and tea with a nice light hop nose as well. Medium-bodied; Strong roasted and toasted flavours with hints of tea, grain, alcohol, pine and rye, all with a solid malt profile that is relatively earthy and some deep tannic flavours at the end. Aftertaste has a relatively toasty bite with hints of the tea and rice, but not much hops, however. Overall, a nice and interesting take on a black IPA, but more of a specialty grain or herb/spice beer to me. Nice to try, but not really what I was expecting or hoping for. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased yesterday at Whole Foods in New York (Bowery), New York on 17-July-2014 for US$6.99 sampled in my hotel room here on the LES of New York on 18-July-2014.

22oz bottle poured into Jolly Pumpkin/Maui Brewing tulip. Big head falls to a surface covering lacing. Dark brown but clear. As mentioned by others I wouldn’t even know there is smoke in this beer if I did not look for it. At first its all hops, no black malt character, hop are pine and citrus mix (guessing mix of different hops, mostly C hops). But once I get the smoke, its real nice. Lapsang Souchong is usually so overpowering that its just too much (in beer and just the tea). A little campfire and sweet smoke. Flavor, to me, is still mostly hops and even less smoke (other ratings seem to differ). Hops are moderately bitter, again no roast/ash, slight faint black bread malt. Not much smoke, for me. Nice light sparkling carbonation to off set everything. Aftertaste has a very nice light black bread sweetness, moderate bitter and mixed hop character. Light smoke all the way at the end of the flavor.
