The Ypsi Gypsi is technically an American Pale Ale but we packed so much hop flavor and aroma into its 4.9% alcohol that we like to call it a session IPA. Golden straw in color with a medium body and crisp carbonation, the Gypsi flaunts a rich flowery, citrusy character on the nose, palate and finish that comes from several late additions of classic American hops.

Clear golden and copper coloured body with a large, four centimetre tall off-white head that fades very quickly. Aroma of fresh grassy and herbal hops with a light grainy and malt note. Light-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal flavour with a light malt flavour, some subdued hay and assertive bitter flavours and ending with a dry flavour without much complexity. Aftertaste shows a touch of bright hops, some subdued malt and yeast flavours and a dry grassy and hay flavour that doesn’t add much to the finish. Overall, a decent beer at best with not much flavour and a subdued taste that has some noticeable hops and dryness, but that’s about it - fairly pale and bland. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 24-July-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 15-January-2017; Sampling this in honor of both of my parents, who were students in Ypsilanti (Eastern Michigan) once upon a time.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Ann Arbor Eisenhower, 3/23/16. Hazy brown, large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of tart citrus and wet cat. Weird. The taste is earth, citrus, lime, caramel malt. Mild bandaid. High carbonation. I do not think this is what they envisioned.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus hops and moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of juicy citrus hops and moderate malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice pale ale style. All around good complexity and balance of juicy citrus hops and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into an English pint glass. Hazy golden with huge white head. Aroma is herbal hops, medium body, medium carbonation, and thick medium-bubble lacing. Taste is citrus hops, herbal hops, and pale malts. Quite good pale ale.

12 oz bottle. Pours an almost clear golden amber with a white head. Orange and grapefruit citrus hop aromas, hinting at lemon and pine. Flavor lean more toward biscuity malts, with grassy hops, hinting at pine and citrus, decent hop bitterness. Smells nice, but a little too restrained on the flavor.

Bottle pour to shaker glass. Attractive, gold color with a persistent, creamy head. Fresh, hoppy with a bit of sweetness; citrus. Smooth on the palate with tangy bitterness in the aftertaste. A good choice for a warm, sunny day.

Tap @ Arbor. Cloudy, yellow orange appearance with a big, fluffy white head. Slightly resiny, piney hoppy aroma with some citrus notes. A little thin. Grapefruit, piney, slightly resiny hoppy, light pale malty flavor. Pretty good.

On tap at the Ypsi Brewpub. Poured a clear deep gold with a nicely lacing white head. Aroma was full of hops, mainly pine notes with an undertone of orange peel. Flavor was hoppy throughout with a well balanced combination of citrus (orange) and pine.
