Double IPA

Hopslam launched in January of 2006 and changed the craft beer scene forever. One of the first Double IPAs to see wide distribution, Hopslam wows with six hops varietals and a dollop of honey. 10% ABV never went down so smooth!

Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double IPA style.

16th February 2020. Tap in Bangers, Austin, Texas, Beer #4900! Literally just off my flight from U.K. Rainey Street is kicking, it’s 24 degrees and the beer is a monster, clear. Aroma is citrus, pine, taste is bitter and pithy, but so smooth for the abv, marmalade, pith, bitter resin. Love it, and the location is a huge bonus.

Bottle. Thanks to Bursprak! Pours light hazy orange with a thin white head. Aromas of hops, grass, orange peel, citrus, floral notes, sweeter fruity notes. Taste is light malty, hops, lots of fruit, mint, plant-like notes, citrus, ripe orange, some peach-like sweeter notes.

Bottle. Malt, grapefruit and red berries in the aroma. tart flavor with grapefruit and red berries, pushing the firm oily hop character into the background. Soft, tasty, well balanced, still with a firm bitterness, especially in the aftertaste. Nice!

12oz can at home. Pours a deep gold almost amber colour with a large pillowy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, tropical fruit, some caramel. Flavour is hoppy yes, but there’s a sweetness from the honey that’s a little too tough. It’s very good and very complex but I think some of the hype has made this be such a highly rated beer.

Can hauled back from the States by Rian (thanks to him). A hazy orange/amber coloured pour with a healthy white head on top. Hoppy, malty, caramel aroma. Tastes hoppy, malty, caramel, some honey and pine too, slight bitterness. Nice DIPA, great to have finally tried this one.

12 oz draft pour during Happy Hour at Stadium Brewing on 20th March 2019. This is a beer I have been longing to try and it didn't disappoint one iota. Slight haze to the bulbous glass of the brown body, huge off-white head of foam that left some heavy lacing. Malty and hoppy with a semi-sweet base which the piney hops balance out nicely, some light citrus notes appear and a hop bitterness takes over towards the end of each sip. A delightful beer!

Can. 8 weeks since packaging. Mostly clear, light amber colour. Very messy, lacing, viscous, white head. Nose has dank and piny hop oil. Sticky, ginger spice malts. Taste is sweet and malty, with a big dollop of resinous bitterness. Medium body. Low carbonation. Sticky on the lips. Lingering, robust bitterness to finish. Straight forward, big hitting IPA.

Can pour into shaker pint glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is hazy orange-yellow with nice sparkle, 2-finger-width off-white foamy head with good retention and soapy lacing. Aroma is mix of mildly sweet and tart fruit, light biscuit and hint of corn-chip. Taste is astringent alcohol/citrus, fruit, caramel malt backbone. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, slick, late-frothy texture, average carbonation with slight numbing of the lips, crisp finish as taste. Overall, glad to have had another one of the icons. However, don't know if I've had a bad batch or what (2 cans that were odd in different ways), but this was surprisingly light on hop aroma (and malt aroma for that matter--corn chip?) and not terribly complex. With a name like Hopslam and a reputation to boot, was expecting to be blown away (still, after 15 years) but found it merely lost in a sea of very good beers.
