Subtle as a brick in the face, this hefty beer is red in colour and full of intense malty flavours. Mildly carbonated, it should be served at warmer temperatures.

650mL bottle, pours hazy golden amber with a small beige head. Aroma of toffee, candied sugar and grains. Flavour of muted caramel malts, some sourness, oxidation and grains. Simplistic and muted. Not good.

Dark brown color, clean, small head. Candi sugar aroma, not bad but going downhill. Some sweetness, but the body is thin; caramel flavor, some candi sugar, low bitterness, still thin final.
Too old.

2011-08-13, bottle at the Alibi Room, Vancouver, vintage 2008, 3 years old, 9.5% ABV, 8-4-7-3-14=36
Mahogany color, with small head and low head retention; small sediment in the bottle. The caramel and malt aroma is mature, with notes of nuts, vanilla, tobacco; maybe slightly oxodised. Basically, caramel flavor; the carbonation is quite low, the body is thinning, there is some trace of liquorice and oxidisation, all signs lead to think that this beer won’t get any better from now; also the bitterness is quite low. Good, but oldish and without bite.

A red copper brown barley wine with a thick moka head. In aroma, pleasant treacle, molasses, and hops, light vinous character. In mouth, a smooth barley wine with light c-hops, oily mouthfeel, molasses, a bit underwhelming (bottle is more than 3 yrs old), from Capflu (thanks Todd). Medium bodied. Tasted Nov. 21 2009.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for sharing - clear amber beer with low carbonation - aroma of hazelnut, dough, cherries - zero carbonation in the mouth - sweet and acidic in equal measure - some nuttiness but not much else - some artificial-tasting sweetness in the finish - a little lifeless, but mildly tasty.

Thank you to JoeMcphee for providing this at his house for CaptainCougar come to NY gathering. Keep bringing the Canadian beers Joe. Pours dead with no head, a dark dark ruby-red amber beer. Aroma is not really strong but what is there is malt driven with light sherry-alcohol. Some burnt chocolate as well. But overall relatively cheap impression. There is a lot of sweet candy in there. Similar flavor with an overall old and dead feel to it. It’s a light body with barely any carbonation.

Very dark brown. No real head. Aroma of milk chocolate, plum and a little toast. As it warms the esters gain raisiny depth and alcohol starts to show. Flavour is fairly sweet with a hint of dark malt bitterness. The alcohol comes through quite a bit at the end...and in the absense of any other strong statements becomes kind of dominant. Overall, the malts are dull, muted with a leaning towards milk chocolate. There’s a few interesting elements and that gives me hope that with some refinements and experience this will emerge as a go-to winter brew. Today, though, it has no sense of purpose...no cohesion...and if a BW is going to lack that it better be a lot ballsier than this. Remaining bottles will hit the cellar I should think - the sherry notes this will gain should improve the beer in the same way they do for Hermannator.
