Keg at the brewery. It pours pretty much black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, toasty, earth, cacao nibs, powdered chocolate, light spice and treacle. The taste is smooth, bitter, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, toffee, treacle, rocky road, spice, some alcohol warmth, charred wood, pepper, earth with a dry, warming finish. Full boys and moderate carbonation. Pretty good, if a touch sweet. The bourbon BA version which I had right next definitely wins.

Medium brown. Has some chocolate taste, fairly sweet. A fairly simple, reasonably tasty, sweet chocolatey strong porter. Not seeing anything massive or standout, though.

Bottle, 22oz. It pours a really dark body, more or less black, and topped by a dense, beige head of finger-thick size. It’s roasted and chocolatey on the palate, with some tar and charcoal hints. Cellar notes. It’s faintly warming on the palate, full-bodied and soft, with a pleasant carbonation level. Mostly dry, but there’s some sweetness in the flavor. Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee, and some dried fruit notes. Lasting roasted finish. Sure a nice one, but in a strange way I’m bored by it. Even though it’s a quite complex one. 140515

Bottle - Roast malts, anise, cinnamon and a bit of chocolate. Jet black with a rich brown head. Dark molasses, bitter chocolate and roast malts. Decent, but pretty plain.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Central Market, 2/12/14, My 3000th American Rating! USA! USA!

Aroma: The nose is roasted malts and chocolate, some spice, earth, and dark fruit
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a lasting head and coating lace
Flavor: The flavor is rich and malty, mostly roast and chocolate, with a little earth and spice
Palate: The body is on the full side, it has a smooth, thick feel, soft carbonation, and a long finish
Overall Impression: Watching the olympics as I drink this, so I had to throw a little national pride. I sure do rate a lot more American craft than anything else. Anyway, this is another really tasty offering from Karbach. This is a bold, flavorful beer.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, raisin, chocolate, roasted malt, floral, pine, toast, licorice, molasses, light coffee, and roasted earthiness. Ok aromas with solid balance of flavors; but is very weak and lacking prominent roasted malt qualities, with much more fruitiness present. Taste of caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, raisin, floral, pine, brown sugar, toast, licorice, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, toast, brown sugar, floral, pine, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Nice balance and complexity of roasted and dark malt flavors; with moderate amount of hop presence and some fairly astringent bitterness lingering after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very solid imperial porter. The weak aromas and astringent hoppiness really knocked it down for me; but this was still an enjoyable offering overall.

Cask at the Flying Saucer, Houston, 21/05/13. Mid black with a mahoosive light tan frothy head - looks the bollocks! Nose is dark roast malt, chocolate, dark fruits, toffee. Taste comprises light roast, malt, molasses, sugars, chocolate, toffee fudge, dark fruits, booze. Full bodied, soft carbonation - worked well via cask dispense, boozey dryish finish. Decent enough stuff, no world beater tho’.
