This beer is arresting. And we are not mentioning this because smokey is slang for police. Rather, because this Bamberg-Style Marzen Rauchbier is brewed with 98% German beechwood-smoked malt and has a complex smokey (the non-police kind) characteristic, resulting in a smooth and crisp finish. This deep amber lager pairs beautifully with smoked and barbecued meats. Doughnuts, not so much.

Okay head and brownish body but you can see through it, sort of. Very heavy smelly leather aroma, beef jerky, nitrite smoke. Flavour is heavy and thick smoke with leather. Chewy. Harsh stuff to drink. I’ve never been a huge fan of smoked beers and this one comes on too strong.

Deep amber-brown, aroma has a lot of beech smoke...good stuff...I assume Weyermann but the dose is pure Schlenkerla. A bit thin on the malts, but the smoke is nice. A touch sweet in the finish. That it invites comparison to greatness is impressive. Yum.

Bottle - Bacony with some dark fruit and finishes with smoke. Clear mahogany with a rich beige head. Taste has some chocolate, dark fruit, toasted malts and a smokey dry finish. This beer is nice as it has much more going on than just the smoke, the chocolate I get at the front is very surprising.

Bottle from Legacy Liquor, Vancouver
Dark brown color; medium sized head, not very persistent. The smoke aroma is deep, persistent, with the campfire and smoked ham character of the Aecht Schlenkerla Märzen from which this one clearly takes inspiration; there is also some wood oven bread. The mouthfeel is dry; dark caramel flavor, with some darker, burnt sugar; strong smoke presence, smoked ham, light ashes; correct bitterness. The final is a bit too dry and ashy.
Remarkably close to the original.

Poured from 650mL bottle. Clear, copper colour with minimal tan head. Full smokey aroma and flavour of bacon and hickory. Medium body. A well done smoked beer.

650 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of campfire and heavily smoked bacon. On no... Flavors of burnt plastic and hickory ash. Kinda thought this would be the result. An experience that can be experience for free by burning garbage.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of mesquite BBQ notes and liquid smoke. Flavour brings out smoked meat, liquid smoke, and slight sweetness. Quite smoky, but not overburdeningly so. Tastes like you're licking the inside of a BBQ. Decent.
