3 Floyds! Dark Horse! The two breweries got together to make a tribute beer paying homage to the Infantry Brigade of the Union Army during the US Civil War known as the “The Iron Brigade.” These “Black Hats” consisting of Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin regiments were fierce warriors with iron dispositions without a doubt. More importantly, they were also beer drinkers and Craft Brewers and if they weren’t busy kicking some Rebel ass. If encampment was anticipated for long enough, they would often turn a batch of homebrew to take on the trail to the next battle. “Oil of Gladness” was one of the many nicknames given to the beer these brave men were brewing out on the warpath. Black Barleywine.

Tap at Brasserie V. Really solid Black Barleywine. Really great collab as it has that thick chocolate malt tone DH loves, and a nice hoppy US Barleywine tone FFF style as well. Drinks quite smooth, one of the best strong beers I've had in awhile. A hell of a lot more depth than all those pastry stouts out there. World Class.

Bottle: Dark cola brown with a small tan head. Chocolate, spicy orange aroma. Flavour is sweet, thick, cocoa/chocolate malt. Almost a cinnamon-like note. Orange malt..... Mild alcohol bitter.....creamy, rich, oily.....excellent.....almost decadent.

tap at Hoppy Gnome - Pours very dark brown with a lingering tan head. The aroma is of roast malt and resinous hops. The flavor is aggressively hopped with pine notes, roast malt, chocolate, and some alcohol noticeable. Full bodied. Bitter finish. This is an unusual take on a barley wine.

Bottle. Chocolate malt and earthy orange peel aroma. Black with moderate brown head. Mildly sweet coffee/chocolate malt, and moderately bitter earthy orange peel/grass flavor. Nice body and balance. A great beer in memory of the mighty men of the Iron Brigade.
