Like a Reuben sandwich in a bottle, Red Reuben is a zesty American Amber Ale brewed with spicy rye malt and peppery caraway seeds. Deep amber with ruby hues, Red Reuben fills the nose with bold aromas of caraway, toasted rye bread and citrusy hops. On the tongue, Red Reuben has a soft caramel sweetness with notes of over ripe plum, roasted nuts, white pepper and a long, dry spicy finish. The Reuben sandwich has finally met its perfect match.

Bottle. Light caraway, cherry/apple, and caramel malt aroma. Dark brown with small head. Moderately sweet cherry/apple, caramel malt and mildly bitter caraway and dry grass flavor. Decent body. Good but doesn’t really taste like a Reuben sandwich - which means I’ll need to find another beer to give to Patrickctenchi in order to get even with him for the New Planet brown ale.

Bottle with thanks to Brian! Pours reddish amber with a medium beige head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is rye bread, caramel, grass, not getting citrus at all. Flavor is fairly sweet, lots of caramel malt, spicy rye, lingering sharp bitterness. Not a lot of caraway here, but I do get some black pepper notes. Medium body. Lingering bitter/spicy finish. Interesting, not great.

Bomber from the Whole Foods in Davis, CA. They seem to have left pastrami and sauerkraut off the ingredient list, but maybe next time. Pours clear darkish copper with a creamy beige head. Aroma of rye spice and medium dark fruit. Med body. Flavor is a mixed bag of rye, maybe hot spice bits other than rye, reasonably pruney notes. Making me think this could be a Belgian dubbel variation. Thought there was metal at first, but it passed. Good drink. Way to treat an amber. Hit til it’s down and kill it with flavors. It’s certainly not dry (it’s an amber after all), but there’s enough flavor to solve that problem.
