2013 winner created by Russ Brunner.

Russ has been brewing for three years but this was his first venture into creating a recipe from scratch. The result of his hard work is a big malty stout with notes of chocolate and coffee that carry through to a velvety finish with hints of roasted cocoa. The richness is balanced by subtle citrus and pine notes from the American hops that add a touch of bitterness to this deep and satisfying brew.

Bottle from Bert’s Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a smallish tan head that quickly dissipates. Aromas of roast, chocolate, molasses, caramel, dark fruit, and earthy hops. The flavor is sweet with lots of sugary molasses, light prunes and figs with some caramel brown sugar and chocolate. Thick and sweet mouthfeel with a light to moderate level of carbonation. This was the best beer in the sixer but was kind of pedestrian and felt a little unattenuated.

Pour is a thick dark black with a large tan head. Aroma is a nice mix of roast and chocolate. Flavor is a nice roast and a super bitter chocolate. Some of the bitterness stays around after the swallow. This is a nice heavy, thick roasty malt laden stout.

Bottle from mix six pack. Real nice thick tan head that coated the glass on the way down. Aroma is dark roasted grain, chocolate and barely.

Flavor is real nice. Thick chocolate, light hints of coffee and a good amount of dark roasted barley. Very light hop hiding in the finish. Texture is creamy with some drying on the tongue. Body is leaning on the full side. There is a reason this is being produced. The brewer did a great job with this stout, nicely done Mr. Brunner!
