Russ has been brewing for three years but this was his first venture into creating a recipe from scratch. The result of his hard work is a big malty stout with notes of chocolate and coffee that carry through to a velvety finish with hints of roasted cocoa. The richness is balanced by subtle citrus and pine notes from the American hops that add a touch of bitterness to this deep and satisfying brew.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, nuts, earth and some bright cherry notes. Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours with some earth, cream, nuts, licorice and coffee noticeable. Aftertaste shows a lot of body and quite a bit of roasted and pungent malt character. Overall, a nice stout and is fairly similar to what I was expecting - not great and not poor - average. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Giant Food in Falls Church (Skyline), Virginia on 03-May-2014 for US$1,66 sampled at home in Washington on 27-September-2014.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, best before 09/2014. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, molasses, light char, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, molasses, dark bread, light char, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roast, toast, molasses, dark bread, light char, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, creamy, and slightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice American stout style. All around good robustness, balance, and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle pours with a dark body that supports a thin mocha head. The mild aroma offers up the expected dark roasted malts and a slight burnt malt note. The aroma seems plain and just too subtle. The taste is nice and roasty with dark roasted and burnt malts that have some depth and modest intensity. This just stays nice and roasty without being brash but rather semi rich and involved. Nice simple yet tasty roastiness here.

12oz bottle. American Stout, isn’t that special. Blackish-brown body. Respectable beige head. A nice mixture of NW hops and big roasty classic UK Stout notes. Pretty solid beer. It’s a beast, but remains relatively drinkable. Kind of a milk stout feel at the end of the day. OK.

I would call this a foreign stoit. Black of course with a lacing head. Well toasted and sweet malt, sugar, some raisin. It is sweet but not in a lacto stout sort of way. Thick palate, reminds me of Lion. Lightly hopped, but they take a back seat to the heavy malt flavors.

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with a half finger of white head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate, dark fruits and a little caramel. Taste is medium bitter, follows aroma. Coffee and dark chocolate dominate. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Soft carbonation and a long finish. Pretty good.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown/black with a slight dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate with light hop. Med body. Flavor is smooth burnt malt with chocolate, arguably coffee, and some hop bitter. It’s actually pretty tasty. Like the way I like to think Guinness was some decades ago. Tho this is likely hoppier.

Black pour - moderate lace - nose of anise, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, prune, tamarind, raisin - fairly creamy texture - sweet cream and cocoa up front, but some char and moderate acidity rush in to balance - some raisin, smoke, chocolate ganache - some tartness not unlike cherry skins arrives late, along with moderate bitterness and a woody, earthy quality - finish is moderately bitter, with lingering roasty black malts - very solid stout.

12oz bottle from Wegman’s, Buffalo, NY. A pitch black pour with a loose tan head; aroma of bitter chocolate with a hint of smoke; sweet chocolate malt taste with some coffee grounds thrown in; and a milky body; then an intense sweet drinking chocolate finish, with a faint background of alcohol. A rather good sweet stout.

Bottle. Light chocolate, coffee, and barley malt aroma - light but nice. Mahogany brown with nice tan head. Sweet chocolate malt and bitter herbal/coffee grounds flavor. Nice body. Very tasty.
