In Bavaria, wheat beers were once the exclusive province of royalty, and it’s easy to see why. With their reliance on costly wheat, a refined aroma and a magical combination of complexity and easy drinkability, wheat beers tickle just about everyone’s fancy. They deserve wider appreciation. Straight-Up Hefe-Weizen is brewed with 60 percent malted wheat and 40 percent pilsner and other malts. It is an unfiltered beer with a cloudy appearance due to yeast and proteins that add a rich creamy mouth feel. A classic Bavarian wheat beer yeast is used, adding subtle layers of banana, bubblegum and spicy clove, the signature trio for the style. The finish is creamy, dry and just a touch tangy.

At Berghoff,Chicago. I assume this is the one I had because the other weizen has been retired for years. A little soap in the flavor and aroma Otherwise it is ok woth moderate sweetness and some banana, hazy orange color and a thin lacing head. Certainly not up to the best examples of the style, but it has more flsvor and palate than some.

Draft at the Berghoff Bar. Quite different from their previous hefeweizen. Not too cloudy (and served here WITHOUT a wedge). Amber to brown, somewhat clearer than the usual unfiltered wheat. Smell cover mostly a slightly spicy wheat nose and definite German hops. Taste brings out the wheat malt, and only further in do we get a hint of banana and clove esters. Focus is on the noble hops, and they are fully represented. Darn good wheat beer all around, with plenty of Old World charm.

Hazy Yellow, Good Head, Some Lacing. Citrus Smell. Light Citrus and Wheat Sour. Real Easy, Refreshing in hot weather. Might be the best out of this sample pack. On second thought, I might be slightly bias, since this is my favorite beer style. Overall: Decent.

Bottle. Banana, light clove and wheat malt aroma. Clear golden yellow with large white head. Lightly sweet banana and stale wheat malt flavor. Okay - would have liked more malt flavor.

Pours hazy yellow with a thin, white/clear head. Scent is banana, clove, yeast. Taste is doughy, sweet banana and spice. Very creamy, very fruity... At the cusp of being syrupy...would benefit from a little sharpness.

Pours a clear, pale gold with almost no head. Aroma of light wheat, banana, and some clove. Taste is medium sweet. Loads of banana and clove with a huge yeasty backbone. Light bodied with a somewhat sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a decently long finish. Overall, not bad. I could drink this one again.
