Tap at the Craft Beer Co - 14/09/12. Extreme dark brown verging on black with a thin tan head that soon clears to the edge. Nose of frazzles, smoked gammon, dark malt, charred wood. Tastes of lightly roasted malts, toffee, vanilla, lighter smoke flavour than the nose suggested. Medium bodied with slightly prickly carbonation.

On tap at the Craft. Opaque black beer with a little tan head. Minerals. Mild roast in the dark malt, trace of bubblegum ester underneath. Smooth smoke is the dominant flavour, the smoke just seems smoother and lighter than most smoked beers but is still the dominant flavour - maybe because it’s beechwood smoke. All comes together with a smooth dry finish. Decent.

Keg at the Craft Beer Co., London. Pours black-brown with a creamy, beige cap. Smokey nose. Light to medium sweet flavor, touches of alcohol and dry wood, definite smoke, light ham. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. A touch thin, it seems. Lasting smoke finish, light to medium sweetness. Not bad, just doesn’t have enough heft.

Draft. Deep brown, approaching black, body with a fizzy tan head, slowly diminishing. Aroma mostly smoke and sweet malts — caramel and toasted grain — with a hint of chocolate. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter with the bitterness lingering. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The smokiness is far from overpowering and that’s nice. The sweet malts and bitterness round out the beer, though neither contribute much on the flavor end.

Tap (growler). Smoked meat, hay and malt aroma. Opaque black-brown color with moderate head. Smoky wood, light chocolate malt flavor with a mild bitter herbal hops finish. A bit funky. One of the hoppiest smoked beers I’ve ever had.
