In Belgium, a Grand Cru is traditionally brewed for special celebrations. This holiday season, there’s definitely something to celebrate: a blue moon on New Year’s Eve. To honor this rare event, we’ve brewed a limited-edition Blue Moon Grand Cru in the US. This small-batch, Artfully Crafted brew incorporates subtle hints of orange peel and coriander and delivers a warm, spicy finish. Garnish with an orange slice and celebrate.

Bottle from Pick’s Liquors poured into a snifter. 2009 version. Pours a cloudy orange with a big off-white head. Slight aroma of orange, caramel and clover. Taste is medium sweet and lightly sour. Tastes strongly of clover and orange. Light bodied with a thick and sticky texture. Fizzy carbonation and not much of a a finish. Overall, not my favorite. Aging has not been kind to this beer. It was much better when it was fresh.

Sampled at Texas Beerfest. Pours a cloudy orange copper with a thick creamy off white head that leaves spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a sweet malt with honey and orange peel. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet belgian yeast and coriander with a spicy finish. A decent Belgian strong ale.

Pour is a cloudy orange with a big white head and lots of floaties. Aroma is a nice corriander with some spice and yeast. Flavor is more orange peel with some spice and vanilla. Decent and flavorful with no alcohol found. Found in the bargan bin but its still holding up.

11/30/2009 Blue Moon Grand Cru, whoda thunk? Pours a cloudy lemon straw color with a tightly bubbled bright white head that sticks around forever. I was hoping to find more in the nose, but I was sadly disappointed. Aromas of citrus, mostly lemons, pepper, spicy wheat malt, and a spice that I assume is coriander. Taste is a lemon and orange kind of feel with some spicy yeast, wheat, alcohol and some pepper. Creamy smooth mouthfeel is the greatest asset to this brew. Vibrantly carbonated, slick mouthfeel. Not bad, but definitely lackluster. I don’t think I’ll be buying anymore of these especially with the $10.75 price tag.

Solid. Cloudy orange color. Yeast in the aroma as well as citrus and coriander. Very sweet flavor, even sweeter than standard ordinary Blue Moon. Lots of sediment near the end of the bottle. Heavy palate, too sweet really.

750 ml bottle, given to me as a Christmas gift by my wife. 2009 Vintage, APR1210 stamped on bottle. Pour is hazed yellow slight twinge of green, tons of floaties and a big fluffy four inch head. First half of head falls fast, remainder lasts for awhile. Aroma of clove spice yeast, faint and a touch on the chemical side. Taste is the straw and the yeast of the nose. A touch cleaner than the nose, though the taste really fades quick, and then is gone almost before the finish. As it warms, flavors comes out more. The chemical taste also comes out as it warms, detracting sone. Palate is medium bodied, on the low carbonation side and some clove and honey in the aftertaste after it warms.

It can only be a matter of time before Cave Creek Grand Cru. This beer is a hazy yellow color with a medium fizzy white head that dissipates fairly fast. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Mild citrus and bready malt in the nose. Light body with flavors of sweet spice, oranges and malt. The finish is lightly spiced with a yeast and fruit aftertaste that does not linger. Kind of surprised the ABV is this high as it is not really noticeable. Not much different than the regular Blue Moon.

Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a chunky-hazy yellow-beige color with a huge yellow-white head. The aroma was tart lemon, lightly yeasty and had a dry spicy undertone. The flavor was strongly musty with moderate lemon, pepper, coriander and a had a tart, tangy and yeasty undertone with a hint of candi sugar. A bit of alcohol showed through. The finish was long and the body was fairly thick and full. Good.
