This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

24 ounce bottle into weizen glass, best before 4/26/2018. Pours slightly hazy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with amazing retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts the whole glass. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Insane appearance. Aromas of big banana, bubblegum, clove, pepper, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread crust, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of nuttiness, roast, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big banana, bubblegum, clove, pepper, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread crust, and toasted biscuit; with light notes of nuttiness, roast, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal/grassy bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of banana, bubblegum, clove, pepper, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread crust, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, herbal, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance; and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 5.6%. Overall this is an excellent dunkelweizen style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; extremely smooth and pretty refreshing to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Likely to be a new recipe over the retired version. This is listed as Brewer's Pride #13, slightly higher ABV. Nicely rich Munich/Vienna malts, balancing weizen yeast, and mild noble hop complexity. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Overall Impression: This is probably the best thing I ever had from Shiner, a nice example of the dunkel style, with a light but highly drinkable flavor combination.

Moderate malts and wheat in thee aroma. Frothy, brown head. Some very marginal lacing and fair retention for a Shiner. Redish-brown in color. Taste is malty with a salty finish and a lot of copper-metallicyness in the finish. Not sure what that is from, but it is in the bottle as well as my glass, so it isn’t a contaminent I added. Otherwise the texture is dryish with, as usual, a bit too much fizzyness in the carbonation. So-so, although it is very sippable.

Bottle. Poured a dark amber color with a light tan/white head. the aroma was very nutty and malty. Has a taste of wheat and caramel and brown sugar. A decent dunkel from Shiner.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a fizzy dark brown color with a small khaki head that faded quickly. The aroma was moderate roasty malts and a hint of chocolate. The flavor was tangy and bitter with a slightly roasty middle and a light dry chocolate element on the finish.

Bottle. A very bready malt aroma with hints of ripe bananas. Clear reddish brown color with moderate head. Syrupy sweet malt flavor with hints of cherry and banana - a bit cloying. Could start a new style - Kristall dunkelweizen - as this is obviously filtered. A nice tasting beer overall and a decent American version of the style.

Freshly broken wood or bark aroma. Delicious turpentine tastedbud initial whammy. Appears nice transparent brown in my steeler stein. Finish is medium carbonation with just a slight (if any) bitter aftertaste.

Not bad. Reminds me of a weizenbock. There is caramel aroma and very light wheat. A little thin and brown but no sediment. A little sweet but lacks the characteristics of a good wheat beer.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Clear, dark brown with an orange glow and a creamy, beige head. Medium-bodied with some caramel sweetness and lightly burned accents. There really ain’t much wheat in this - reminds me mostly of a Dunkel. 170406
