Brussels formerly counted a fair number of famous pils breweries, with Wiels by Wielemans, Ekla by Vandenheuvel, Jager by Roelants, and many more. Brasserie de la Senne revives this tradition of Brussels pils and presents Zenne Pils, an unfiltered, unpasteurised craft pils. Eric Toft, brewmaster from Schönram brewery in Bavaria and one of the greatest masters of the style, has coached the Senne brewers about the traditional brewing methods of this peculiar bottom-fermented beer, iconic in Germany and in the Czech Republic.
Zenne Pils was brewed with the traditional method of decoction. This adds depth and complexity to its malty character, and makes it very nicely drinkable. It is neither pasteurised nor filtered, which makes it naturally hazy at low temperatures. It develops a fine bitterness, more pronounced than that of the “pils” we are used to drink in Belgium today. Moreover, it is generously hopped with old varieties of German hops that are considered to be the most noble ones, and which the Brasserie de la Senne brewmaster directly selected at one of the best hop growers’ of the South of Germany. 4,9% abv, keg only.
The logo was designed by the brewery’s resident artist, Jean Goovaerts. The Brussels pentagon recalls our national symbol, the Atomium, as well as -and most importantly- the imminent move of the brewery to its new site of Tour & Taxis, situated in the “1000 Brussels” commune.

Bottle from Dranken Vandewoude and drunk with Nelson in Maastricht. Hazy gold colour lasting white thin head. Looks fizzy. A decent character to this beer. Some softness to it. Not a lot of noble hop but a little white flower flavour. A soft pils. OK.

I don't get to mention the Shropshire Union Canal too much on a beer site, but this beer was bought at an old canalside building in Chester called The Cellar on the said waterway, thankfully none of the water in that made it into this bottle. This is a mildly floral, mildly dry pils, certainly not a conventional one, but interesting.

Bottle @ Tour & Taxis Park, Brussels. From the bottle, so the only thing I can tell about the appearance is, it's unfiltered, hence slightly hazy. Aroma's of malty sweetness, fruity, flowery hops. Flavour is moderate bitter with just a hint of malty sweetness. Light bodied. Right carbonation. Finishes with firm bitterness that lingers on for a long time. Very nice pilsner.

Bottle from Against The Grain. Pale golden body with a light haze and a thick white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of lemon, funky yeast and minerals. Flavour of sea salt, white bread and lemon. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Very fizzy. Crisp and refreshing with a funky De La Senne quality to it.

It’s took ages to tick this. Tap at source. Mostly clear pale gold. Decent white foam. Crisp clean lemon vibe. Squiff of lime. Taste is dry and crisp bitter. Brisk bitterness throughout. Dry light bitter finish.
