12 ounce bottle into snifter, 2018 vintage. Pours fairly hazy very dark ruby reddish brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy cream colored head with good retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big amaretto, cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apricot, peach, pear, red apple, fruit pits, almond, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, amaretto flavor, fruity yeast, moderate bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge amaretto, cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apricot, peach, pear, red apple, fruit pits, almond, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with lighter notes of coconut, licorice, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, amaretto bitterness; bourbon/oak tannin spiciness, and slight amaretto tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of amaretto, cherries, raisin, plum, fig, apricot, peach, pear, red apple, fruit pits, almond, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, coconut, licorice, cocoa, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, amaretto flavor, fruity yeast, moderate bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop flavors; with a solid malt/bitterness, bourbon/oak spiciness, and amaretto tartness balance; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness, amaretto tartness, and bourbon/oak spiciness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready/grainy, and lightly slick/sticky/tangy/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild lingering warmth of 11%, with no barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic flavored barrel aged scotch ale. All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, amaretto flavor, fruity yeast, moderate bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/tart/tannic/drying finish. Amazing balance of rich malts, amaretto flavor, and fruity yeast; with nice overall bourbon barrel presence/integration that isn't overdone. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on base style example as expected. I can see some people thinking the amaretto is too overpowering, but I thought it worked perfectly with the fruity Scottish yeast profile of the base beer.
