The Pacific Ocean and its rich variety of sea life is part of our daily experience here on the Mendocino Coast. Since the release of North Coast Brewing’s first beers in 1988, we have sought to reflect our love of the coastal world in our lively array of iconic beers. Beachmaster, an Imperial IPA, is a tribute and companion to our flagship beer, Ruedrich’s Red Seal Ale, honoring the mighty Northern Elephant Seals that frequent our coast from Mexico to Alaska. Artist Mike Patrick, whose work has appeared on several of our labels including Red Seal Ale, Old No. 38 Stout, and North Coast Steller IPA, created the bull Elephant Seal illustration.

355ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, dark orangey golden to amber colou rwith small frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Intense, piney, resinous and citrusy fruity, hoppy aroma, sweet-ish, pale and caramel malty background, notes of lemon and grapefruit, tangerine, some zesty aspects. Taste is crisp, bitter, citrusy fruity hoppy, slightly resinous, pale and caramel malty backbone with hints of almond, notes of lemon and grapefruit, some tangerine, a touch of pineapple; lingering, pungent hoppy finish. Oily-watery texture, smooth and soft palate, pungent bitterness remains on the lips, fine, prickly carbonation. Very bitter but overall well balanced. The only thing that bothers me is the almond part/effect.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a bright orange-caramel color with a medium sized creamy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweet, boozy and piney. The flavor was sweet, tangy and boozy with pine and grapefruit. Long finish. Moderately full bodied.

Rated November 2018. 12oz bottle pours with a crystal clear copper body that supports a thin light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up plenty of pine hops backed up by floral hops, malts and a thin sense of grapefruit citrus. The taste delivers a wide load of bitter almost resiny pine hops as well as some bitter floral hoppiness. To midway meek sweet notes of malt and a faintly bitter grapefruit sensation bubble to the surface and are barely noticed under the weight of the pile pine hoppiness. Nice IIPA.

Tasty old-school DIPA, a big, bitter, piney hop bomb with mild veins of grapefruit and orange against a formidable caramel malt base and a brutally bitter finish. Very much the type of imperial India pale ale I miss, less focused on juice and haze and low bitterness, more of a chunky, slaphappy resinous beast glorifying the version of the style that made all us angry old coots love hops in the first place. A tad bit boozy on the back end--the one place modern IPAs surpass their predecessors--but otherwise a perfectly enjoyable bitter bastard.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/8/2018. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, green pepper, pine, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, green pepper, pine, caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/rind, green pepper, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is an excellent DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV with mellowly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Very juicy, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; nice sized bready malt backbone, not overly sweet/heavy for the ABV. Feels like Ekuanot hops mostly. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Homebrewstuff. Clear amber pour. small foamy head. Aroma is caramel malts with a hint of pine. Taste is first and foremost malts, minor hoppy bitterness floats on the surface, slightly sweet, bitterness lingers on the palate for a while. Doesn't seem potent at all.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours coppery gold with a white head. Aroma is somewhat roasty malt with strong mixed hops seeming to include a garlic note. Approaching full bodied. Definitely roasty malt in support, but the hop is humongous. It's not all that harshly bitter, but there is a huge amount of hop. It's almost slippery with them. I am just not prepared to claim I can identify a single particular hop, but I'd start with floral/earth/herb - but there must be more. With the ABV and the amount of hop this is killer. Maybe a new IPA style is breaking out: "too much hop". Good thing, perhaps, that this isn't harsh. Would like to know what the hops are!
