One of Samuel Adams' better offerings. Not sure why RB classifies SA Oatmeal Stout as a Sweet Stout since it's dry as a bone, lots of bitter chocolate and roasted malt backed up by a moderate but firm floral bitterness on the back end. Hints of anise and black cherry and caramel pop up, while the British hops fight off any lingering sweetness. Pours a gorgeous black, offering up a thick, lasting tan head with infinite lacing. Smooth, creamy texture provides yet another reason to love oatmeal. Nose is the only sticking point, mild chocolate and roasted malt but a bit to weak for such a hearty beer. My beer snob status says I should find a reason to rate this pint lower, but I can't. It's a damn good beer.

Had this on draught at the American Beer Fest 2005 and again at Redbones. Pours a deep chestnut and hickory brownish-tan, with some dull-olive brown and darker, almost violet hues swirling around. Hazy and unfiltered with a dark beige-yellow head perched nicely atop, about one finger high and retained well. Aroma smells of dry chocolate, not quite bitter, with light toffee and hints of raisins and prunes. Bits of vinousness and a dry, earthy, mustiness as well. Flavor begins with a good balance of dry and sweet, light raisins and a pruney/vinousness slowly building on the palate. Light chocolate notes, dry yeast and earthiness. Texture is a bit watery at times, slightly gritty as well, with a medium body overall. Moderate carbonation. Very respectable sweet stout, well-executed I thought. Wish stuff like this was a regular offering on tap around the area. Perhaps a bit of sticky sugariness, on the finish, that detracts from the overall complexity.
