Keg at Casc, Aberdeen. It pours rich copper with a small white head. The aroma is sweet, oily, sticky, resinous, toffee, fruit cake, perfumed, brioche, candied orange peel, toasted almond and vanilla. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, oily, pannetone, candied orange, tangerine, boozy warmth, earl grey tea, touch of tannin, booze and wood with a very drying finish. Medium+ body, soft carbonation and oily mouth feel. Pretty interesting gear, but perhaps a touch sweet. Fun stuff anyhow.

4 oz taster at Standard Market for Repeal Day. Light, almost amber color that doesn’t look like a Doppelbock (I know, it’s “blond.”). Persistent thin layer of foam. Not getting very much nose out of this, but then they are cleaning the bar with various smelly sanitizers. Aah, there’s that slight impression of “bourbon and branch.” Taste is more slight than the Cooper #1 Scotch Ale, pretty easy to just slip the whole thing in my mouth if I’m not careful. I get some more of the bourbon barrel impression, and despite the strength of this beer, very little heady alcohol. Maybe I haven’t has many BBA lagers, and being cool fermented, perhaps they don’t pick up as much bourbon note? No, there is more bourbon as I dive deeper. And it does finish with that lighter whiskey and water taste. But just a bit more “chewy,” so the mouthfeel is still a proper doppelbock.

12 ounce bottle. Clear amber with extremely fine particles. Thin tan head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, whiskey, toffee, raisin. Taste is vanilla, oak, whiskey, bready malt, caramel. Thin, boozy.

Bottle. Pours a clear orange gold with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of sweet grains with some bourbon and a bit of caramel and straw backing. Flavor is similar with bourbon and sweet grains supported by caramel and a bit of straw backing.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/30/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep golden/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of honey, wheat, cracker, biscuit, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and nuttiness; with light notes of banana, pepper, clove, herbal, grass and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balanced and complexity of bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big honey, wheat, cracker, biscuit, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and nuttiness; with light notes of banana, pepper, clove, herbal, grass and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast/bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of honey, wheat, cracker, biscuit, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, nuttiness, pepper, light banana/clove, herbal, grass and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly silky/sticky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 9.2%, with zero barrel booziness. Overall this is a great barrel aged blonde doppelbock. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. This is just BBA Fassinator. The base beer is perfectly balanced with the barrel character all the way through; but doesn’t feel quite as malty rich and heavy as it was prior to barrel treatment. A very enjoyable offering, but not as impressive as the base beer to me.
