12oz can. Roasty, deep specialty malts. More roast than I associate with Black Ales, so this rests comfortably in the Stout category. Sweet and sugary, not a lot of finesse. Drinkable, not off, just heavy handed and amatuerish. Not that impressive.

Pretty good stout. A touch too sweet for me personally, nevertheless solid. Good coffee and roastiness.

Can: Charred oak, tree bark, and baker’s chocolate aroma, not strong. Mahogany, thin tan head. Chocolate and raisin, strawberry accents. Medium body, moderate carbonation. I expected this to be fairly ordinary but it turned out to be really nice.

12 ounce can into pint glass, best before 12/15/2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger fairly dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, light nuttiness, light pine, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy/piney hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, light nuttiness, pine, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/pine and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate herbal/piney hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent American porter style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted/bready malt and light-moderate herbal/piney hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Tap at the brewery. Black, lacing head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Very heavy, dark roast in thee flavor, burnt grain and coffee. Palate is on the thick side. I am not sure what i think of this very heavy roast that makes the beer bitter.

Sampled from the tap at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Pours black with a dark brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice roasted malt note with some chalky dark grains and a bit of coffee. Flavor has more sweet chocolate but still mainly bitter dark grains, roasted malts and a touch of coffee.
