A roasty, dry stout made with real fudge for a subtle chocolate-fudge character without being sweet. Top with whipped cream for a special treat!
We first visited Mackinac Island in spring of 2008 and were instantly smitten. So we couldn’t have been more excited when we were asked to brew a signature Mackinac Island Fudge Stout.
This rich and satisfying beer was inspired by long summer afternoons and lazy weekends spent on the Island. But just like summer on the Island, it’ll be gone before you know it, so drink it up while it’s here!

Bottle. Volatile chocolate. Fairly flat. Taste does have some chocolate in there. Now a little sizzle comes thru. More fudgy chocolate in the middle. Seems to have a little more alky than the 5.5% stated here. In the end it seems to grow on you a little. Almost becomes a little cloying towards the finish. Could not drink more than one of these. Rich, yes, satisfying? IDK. I guess I got to try it topped with whipped cream?

Purchased at Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids, MI, enjoyed at home on the first day of fall. Appearance is pitch black, moderate consistency. Aroma is very faint with light fudge. Taste is a bit odd, there is fudge in there but it’s more of a watery stout, so watered fudge would be an accurate description for this brew. Not a fan.

Sampled on draft at Vintage Estate this beer poured a black color with a small foamy tan head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was dryish with wood, chocolate and smoke. The flavor was dryish with smoke, roasty malts, cocoa powder and wood elements. Long finish. Moderately full bodied and fairly smooth. Disappointing.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent seasonal release. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, fudge, toast, dark bread, light smoke/char, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Moderate amount of dryness with only light lingering flavors after a short period the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice flavored dry stout style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt, fudge, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours dark brown... Aromas of roasty malt and lovely dark chocolate with a little twang. Flavor is a decent stout with a slight infection and sour edge. Again... Arbor needs quality control.

The beer pours brown-black with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate malt and grain. Medium body with flavors of bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt and slight hops. The finish is roasty with a short chocolate malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall, I was honestly expecting more out of this one.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a small light tan head. On the aroma, it really does smell like chocolate fudge, also with some dark fruit. Flavor is much more led by roasty coffee, with some slightly sweet chocolate. The fudge didn’t quite make it all the way to the flavor, but it still turned out very well, even if not exactly as promised.

On tap at Mulligan’s, Cheboygan. Opaque deep brown body, thick tan nitro head. Chocolaty nose with roasted malts. Rather dry body with fudge flavors, good chocolate complexity, with cocoa powder and roast in the finish. Somewhat tangy palate. OK.
