Named out of respect for our Brewmaster’s family at Fire Station #11, this is a golden ale that is built with 40 pounds of hops. The malt bill provides a balanced backbone and the big hop finish gives a pleasant bitterness and a nose full of herbal and citrus notes. A real palate cleansing experience.

Hazy light amber and copper coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of sweet, resinous and piney hops with some good caster sugar, a touch of apricot and pear sweetness and a good dose of alcohol noticeable as well. Medium-bodied; Strong toffee and grassy flavours at first show with some light citrus, pine and resin, along with a touch of perfume and flowers. Aftertaste is nice and airy with the hop bitterness front and centre and then showing some grass, alcohol, malt and toffee towards the end. Overall, a decent IPA with a proper balance, some nice hop bitterness and smooth flavours and a good complexity that ranges hop varieties and shows aspects of the malt that you may not expect. I sampled this sixteen ounce can purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 24-July-2015 for US$2,29 sampled at home in Washington on 24-January-2017, exactly eighteen months after purchase.

16 ounce can into pint glass, no can dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and moderate malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good sized pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon/orange peel, pine, light caramel, honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of big citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate malt sweetness; with a solid malt/bitterness balance and some light lingering bitter hop astringency after the finish, but not too bad. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and resinous/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a nice IPA. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of big citrus/tropical/piney hops and moderate malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. The bitterness was a bit rough, but it had nice hop complexity overall. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Shared a 16-oz can, poured to a pint glass. It didn’t have the standard floral, citrusy IPA taste; instead it offered bitter straw with some malt character. Not a standout but a decent beer.
