Imperial Red IPA Aged in Bourbon Barrels

What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.

0.33 l bottle at Craft Room, Opatovina Zagreb. Murky amber, small off-white head. Hops, malts, fruit and oxidation all present. Some wood character. Hops are fruity and earthy, cardboardy touch. Lots of dried fruit. Sharp citrusy notes underneath. Light bourbon. Slightly boozy. Hop flavors turned out a bit weird, bitterness nicely preserved. The best you could do by aging a triple IPA.

Bottled April 10, 2018, enjoyed February 14, 2019. Pours a clear deep amber to brown colour. Small off white head with a thin layer retention. Aroma's are typically red IPA: firm hops with some caramel and some wood and just light bourbon booziness. Retronasal there's caramel malts, a bit aged hops, wood, light booze. Taste is moderate bitter with moderate malty sweetness. Alcohol is warming but not too sharp. Medium bodied. Finish is firmly bitter and dry, with some wood. Not the best of their barrel series, but certainly enjoyable.

Bottle: Cloudy, amber-brown with a cascading beige head as it turns over. Huge, bourbon-soaked wet wood aroma. Caramel, vanilla, bitter chocolate. Taste is oak, bourbon, caramel malt, raw vanilla. Really harsh and boozy....not a fan of the flavor at all.

26/I/19 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home, BB: n/a, bottled: 4/X/18 - (2019-132)
Clear deep red to brown amber beer, big irregular dark yellow head, very stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, vanilla, milk chocolate, more a Barley Wine than an IPA, bit sweetish impression. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: alcohol up front, pretty bitter, hoppy, some sweet malts, dry, bit of caramel. Aftertaste: very bitter and hoppy, bourbon notes, bit sugary, vanilla and caramel, some chocolate, bitter finish, lovely beer! Not an IPA though…
