Legend has it that Joe Short wouldn’t have his signature sweet stache had it not been for Hopstache. Amarillo, Simcoe, and Citra hops are joined with an intense amount of grapefruit zest for an intensely grapefruit-forward IPA that gives both sucker-punch-to-the-mouth and gentle-citrus-caress-to-the-cheek vibes all in one glass. This is a 2010 classic and we’re happy to have it back.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear orange gold with a full 2 fingers of white foam that linger. Amarillo hop orange aromas alongside pink grapefruit zest dominate...a touch of biscuit malt as it warms. More of the same on the palate. Balanced grapefruit zest and pith with bright hops. Medium bodied Midwest-style IPA. This is nice.

12 ounce bottle from Elmer’s Escanaba. Murky dark orange, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of grainy toffee malt, syrupy grapefruit. The taste is grapefruit zest, grainy caramel malt. Medium bodied.

Bottled 355ml. -no ABV stated at the label or bottle. Unclear golden coloured, small to medium sized white head, grapefruity nose. Sweetish malty, slightly biscuity, grapefruity hoppy, pine, notes of oranges and rather bitter finish. Very good one.

Pretty much a "typical" Shorts IPA, which means it’s pretty good. Yes, there is grapefruit but just a taste. Mildly bitter.

Poured from a bottle dated 5/29/2015. Aroma is moderately malty with some cracker malt notes and light toasted bread. Moderate grapefruit aroma with some pine resin and some dank wood notes. A bit of an odd phenolic note similar to decomposing wet grass. Pours a hazy, dull, golden orange with a small, moderately thick white head that exhibits decent retention as it recedes to the edges where it lingers. Moderate lacing and small legs. Flavor starts with a light sweetness and some cracker and light caramel notes. Moderately strong bitterness. Moderate grapefruit notes with some lighter orange and pine resin. A light dank note with some lingering cracker malt character. None of the weird note that was in the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but grapefruit sculpin is much better. The odd aroma is off putting, but the flavor is better. The flavor is pretty light on the grapefruit zest though.

Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with a medium off white head that dissipates slowly with some lacing. Aroma is very grapefruit citrus forward, fruity. Flavor is similar, not quite as citrusy, light sweet, medium bitter. Medium body, oily mouthfeel.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 3/11/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden orange color with a nice 2 finger dense white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, peach, passion fruit, orange rind, floral, light pine, grass, light honey, and floral earthiness. Incredible aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus and tropical fruit notes with moderate malt balance. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, pine, orange rind, floral, grass, light honey, bread, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, pine, floral, bread, light honey, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice flavor balance and complexity of hops with grapefruit flavor; with a moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent IPA! Great balance of hops with the grapefruit flavors; and very smooth to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Draft at the 2012 Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Clear, light orange body, thin cream head. Nose of strong catty hops; oily, catty, hoppy body with hints of citrus and pine. OK.
